A few places you can go:

1. STAR SYX
This is an a-go-go place. There are many pretty gals dancing on the stage. Some may strip to total naked and dance. Some in bikini. But be careful, there are some post-op trans. Usually those very fair, sexy, pretty and tall ones. You can get the gal to sit with oyu at the tables in the darker corners and buy her drinks. Then you can autoroam her, finger her, whatever. After that just tip her a bit. You can also ask her to bring you to a nearby short-stay hotel and have a shot. Fogot the price tho, but not expensive. The drinks is only 70baht.

2. PENDORA
Ask the tuk-tuk to bring you there. There is a fish tank of gals and you choose the gal, like in bangkok. Pay about 1,600 - 2,000 baht.

3. SAYURI COMPLEX
Ask the tuk-tuk to bring you there. Also got fish tank, but this one has body-to-body foam bath. About 1,600 - 2,000 baht.

Cheers!

hi,
I just back from a 40 days holiday in Thailand. I had went to Chiangmai and had stay there for about 3 nights.

For the cheonging part, I will break it up to 4 types.

1. Massage Parlour

a. Sayuri Complex
3 Soi 2 Bumrungrat Road, Chiangmai
Tel: 053-242361, 053243788

b. Pandora Massage & Health Club
459/62-64 Charoenmuang Road, T. Watket Muang, Chiangmai
Tel: 053-245740, 053-245747

c. O.T. Traditional Thai Massage
459/100 Charoenmuang Road, T. Wat Gate A.Muang,
Chiangmai
- I try before. 200B for 2 hours. Not the soapy type. But
suspect got special if choose the oil-massage. Can ask the
OKT if want special.
- near Pandora Massage.

I did not try the soapy massage at both place. Should be cheaper than Bkk. If not wrong, should be around 1800B. from look-wise, Sayuri is more class, with stage performance (like Pink Lady Complex in Hatyai) , and Karaoke, like those all-in-one complex. I went to the 2 massage parlours by foot. not recommended. Sayuri is more remote. Can take the tuk tuk there. Did not try but just went to see and hope can share experience with all the bros here.

2. Karoke
At the Moon Muang Road, near the Thaphae Gate, there is a Karoke call Ai Karoke. Many beautiful and young fair-skinned gals sit outside. If inside, u can choose the gal when the mamasan bring the gals for u to choose. I let the gal sing. did not hanky panky. I not experienced in the Karoake scene. But the gals are quite ok. you can try to ask for more service. can ask OKT for advice.

3. Beer Bar
A lot of beer bars in the following areas:
a. Loi Khro Road, before the Khotchasan Road junction
- if you walk from the night bazaar area, pass thru Suriwongse
Hotel, along the Loi Khro Road, to the end of the Loi Khro
Road before the junction where you will see a moat with
water fountain, which is near the Thaphae Gate.
b. beside Chiang Inn Hotel
- there is a quite pretty ah-lian like gal at a bar (i forgot the bar
name). Long hair, fair skin. She is from Chiang Rai. She want
me to take her out but I am too tired as I just arrived from a
13-hr train ride from Bangkok

4. A-go-go bar
a. Spotlight
b. Cozy Place
- both are located opp. each other along the moat near Thaphae
Gate
- Spotlight is along Chaiyaphum Road. In a distance ahead, you should see the Rydges Thapae Hotel.
- Cozy Place is along Moon Muang Road, opposite the Spotlight
along the Thaphae Gate. There are many small pub around. The
sign board could be a bit small, so had to look out for it.
- both are quite small compared to those in Bkk. Spotlight seem
to be better a bit.
- those who like popcorn, take note that the cozy place serve
that. seem to be compulsory. got charge. can try to decline it to
save cost.
- there is another a-go-go mentioned by the other bros here.
Forgot the name. Better than my mentioned 2 A-go-go. Got
performance.

This is what I have to share. For the 40 days, I start from Sungei Golok, then upward to Hatyai, Koh Samui, Hua Hin, Bangkok, Pattaya, Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Sai and Tacheleik of Myanmar.

If need info on those place mentioned above, I willingly to share my experience. I got some of the info. from the forum here. I believe in putting back from where I get from. Hope that all the bros here can share their info. here so that we will cheong better, happier and wiser.

I might have left out some other places which I hope all the other bros can share. I cover the above place within 3 nights without any prior trip to Chiang Mai. Hope to cover more places next time.

i think it's a good deal with the package, chiangmai hotels aren't as cheap as hatyai bro! but I think if you calculate 58 x 2 = 116 for 2 nites well that will afford you some reasonable hotels around city centre. if you have 2 to go, it's worth to take package lo.. if alone.. better stay the guesthouses.. many angmoh travelling ard the world.. very likely to get free ONS if you're aged bet18-35 and not as ugly as Black Pit but need not be as good as Brad pitt kekekeke

 I went to Tacheliek thru Mae Sai. I extend my 30 days visa-free stay through here. Where is Thaton? I thought from Thailand side, to go to Myanmar, either can use Mae Sai or Mae Sot. I dun have money to go there when I am still studying. hehehe....or now can afford. Good experience. Envy those farang who always have the chance to backpacking, unlike us Asians who has limited times.

Those who are interested in Myanmar gal can try them in Tacheliek too. There are many those motorcycle-thrishaw who can take u for a tour of Tacheilek and goto KFC farm. Take note for those day-pass visa, cannot go beyond 5 km of the border checkpoint. Those motorcycle-thrishaw riders know it.

Maybe I overshot the topic now. This is about Chiangmai. Sorry.
Anyone who has experience meeting Chiang Mai university gals. Saw many those beautiful young gals in Chiang Mai. Must have a lot of them from CMU. I know of a farang who stay near the university because he want to know them.

hi, I think that thaton is not a legal crossing to Myanmar. What if inside and kenna caught...how?...image got free lodging and food in the Myanmar's jail.

Can you pass me some of the CMU gals' contact. Or maybe where they hang-out (any place beside Bottom's up). Would like to be friend of them.

Would like to go for a Mekong River tour next time. To Myanmar, Thailand, Laos, Cambodia and Vietnam. Maybe even China's Yunan Province too. I am doing research now. Will need some of your experience.

Thaton is a legal crossing, there's a bridge you walk across there's an arch in Myanmar side with soldiers guarding the area, those days, you throw them 1 pack of Marlboro cig will take you far :), that bridge looks very typical vietnam war bridge kinda scene...

my CMU contacts long ago liao la.. cannot use liao.. sorry can't help much on that area .. but i think one needs a decent 2weeks to get any result in Chiangmai...my shortest trip there was 2 weeks and longest..1.5 months staying in remote Fang disctrict

Mekong river I've been there passing thru from Chiang mai to Vientiene in Laos.. very tiring journey and the road really is for horse riding only.. but now maybe change liao.. interesting but now I have so many commitment that I have limited time for travelling and backpacking... although my heart still yearns for those adventures..

Hi,
Good to know a fellow bro here that are adventurous. This is the first time that I had went for such a long trip up. It really open my eye out there. I really sick of the "rat race" in the Singapore coperate world. Hope to have of this trip in the near future. Right now, I am planning a Mekong river or China trip. Hope to more there for at least 2 months.

Could you tell me your life in Chiangmai and Fang district. Will like to go back to these 2 places soon.

generally from my experience, the chinese in LOS are mostly teochew.. so you may try teochew dialect first. If they looked stunned, maybe they can't speak chinese at all. then try "pom yak ja dteng ngaan kap ter".. see got p[ositive response or not :D

Maps talc. Orders received. Ready to go on exact -D. Foreign paratroopers will land on Tapae Gate vicinity to rendezvous with advance party and local spies. Mission bound with dangers such as 500B commission booby traps if you render the mercenary services of the tuk tuks when advancing to Sayuri or Pandora. Much like the same tactics employed by Cupidy and Mona Lisa in Bangkok. :D

Elite enemy forces highly concentrated in Chiang Mai Land. The cream of the crops are all ambushing in this area. Will call for fire support from Artillery formations if needed. Try not to lah. If not lose face. Hahaha. :D

If those were your recent CMU conquests then you are the fuckin' man :). I'm a sucker for cute girls with braces too. I met one CMU girl working at a small live band student pub called yor por kor? (at least I think that's what it's called) it was a few sois away from drunken flower. She was definitely chio and had braces but I was with a friend (who was a girl) and it would have been in bad taste for me to hit her up right then and there for a mobile #. So I missed out on that opportunity. Ahh..but in Thailand when you miss one you will always find her twin elsewhere :D.

Check out Mandalay or Fashionhouse sometime too lots of massage girls (mostly Sayuri) go to those two places.

Stay in city area mah. More convenient. Stay in mountain sibei sian. Cannot be bonk whole day right? But can bonk in forest like an animal. Haha.

Your are right!
Even Thai WL also try to bring their boy friends only because they are not WL when they are at the village.

In southern thai, the villages even more conservative. She want to stay with me at the village again but her grdmo want her to rent a house at Hatyai
because her grdmo is very shameful of the villages.

Hope bros will post more FRs of places to cheong in Chiangmai instead. Now Tiger airways fly to Chiangmai. It is a place with lot of hidden gems. Was there for 5 days last year. Kept exploring but couldnt find anything interesting due to lack of information. Bros who are doing business or working there should know the place better than us. We need your help to open this place up. Eg. Vietnam was not a fav place to cheong until the ex-Joo Chiat became famous of their viet girls and bros started posting more and more FRs in the Vietnam thread. Hope this Chiangmai will become as popular as Saigon.

CML have at least 3 or more KTVs around. Olivia 1 & 2, Comodo, etc. Yes start with 2 drinks (1 hour) for the girl to sit down with you. That is excluding your own drink and the girl's. Ask from mamasan to show you girls that can go for OFF (bonking). The rates in Comodo KTV are 1800B ST/2500B LT. Be careful of the short hair pushy mamasan in Comodo.

Hi Encik. Unfortunately kena activated by S3 to go HQ for IPPT. PM me your comms mhz frequency no. I will comms you very soon. Please use 900 series signal set for secure transmission. :D

Chiangmai Land nothing much except KTV joints. No joints after Bossy 2000 Disco so don't bother to walk further down that stretch.

Which GOGO bars have you been to? Foxy Lady? Lady drinks at 85B each. Make them drink tequila shots instead of the orange juice or soft drink shit. Inspect the drink to make sure they do not mix with water. Keep no prisoners! Over and out. :D

I LOVE CHIANG MAI!

Doi Suthep is beautiful and cool.. then got that famous temple on the moutain.. suddenly cannot remember the name... not forgetting the zoo.. latest attaction is still the panda bears.. heard night zoo opening soon...

hehehe these are the day activities... night activities got night market...

oh?! U mean like "cheong" scenes huh? I think Ruhua briefed quite abit already.. hehe ... don't expect CM to be as happening as Bkk though. Personally I feel CM is more for day activities.. R&D...

oh! If u stay Imperial Mae Ping.. check out the hotel staffs! Last time the tour help lady at Lotus PSK also not bad! Asked for her number but in the end no time to arrange to go out with her.... :(

my pleasure.. haha

No doubt Chiang Mai has the most beautiful Thai ladies... but unfortunetly most of them come Bkk to work already! wahahahahahahaa
U should check out the restaurant.. The Good View... and pubs along that stretch of road.. not sure the name.. but its suppose to be popular among the locals. There's another name "The Cottage" or something.....
I think the disco, Bubble, also popular among the locals.... recommended by the beautiful hotel lady... *sigh*

Beware of lousy tuk tuk drivers who promise to bring u to MP with "beauliful lalies"... and be prepared to kanna "chop chai tao" by tuk tuk drivers after midnight as they're the main public transport in CM...

MP generally cheaper in CM.. but still.. night life nothing compare to Bkk.....
cheers

My mia luang has ask the first mia noi to stay with her permanantly :p
Of couse it is impossible.
I should get my 2nd mia noi by now but due to jealous and at the end the reason that I can not marry the 2nd mia noi because she is my first mia noi's sister(Their grand mothers are sister) It was opposed by the villager
I has to go other village to find my 2d mia noi
I get the most beautiful girl(18 only) at the other village with the blesing from her whole tribes except her because she know my first mia noi as well
I have to get the approval from first mia noi otherwise I will prohibited to marry any girl at that area
Approval has granted

So 2nd mia noi still need some effort
There are somel more secret .

I has to quit cheonging but still able to bring other bros around is the timing
is correct

Yes handling so many of your Khon Nuer wives will leave very little time for cheonging. I find it a hard task trying to 'split' your body as and when required. But as always everyone will have their secret formula. :D

I am not Commander. Only a PSR. You are a key appointment holder. My job is to take care of the 'dirty' odds and ends. Good to hear more are joining in the attack.

Encik you very the 'fast hand'. Once I release intel and within 36 hours you've some back wth some updates. Keep it up! Dancers here are very young looking if that's your kind of thing! Yummy. :D

Maybe I have passed by New Star Palace KTV before. But can't rememeber. Encik unfortunately I don't have command post yet. A PSR's job is tough and always on the move before he gets KIA. ;)

Try ChiangMai Land Rd.
Got a few KTVs to book girl.

I was offered 2200baht cuz a tuk tuk brought me there.
So i guess without tuk tuk prices should be about in the 1500-1800 range.

Places open in the mid afternoon about 3-4pm only not like HDY where they open early.
But seriously speaking, if u going there only to cheong for girls, forget Chiangmai.

Stick to Bkk or HDY better.
BKK is great for MPs and bar girls.
HDY great for LT KTV girls.

Yep...quite rite.
Was disappointed with Chiangmai as when I went there on a midday run..Arrived in afternoon and stayed only 1 nite ard Night Bazaar/Chiang Inn area. Here are some spots I roamed ard:

Farms (ChiangMai Land)-
Was brought to a KTV/farm opposite a Chinese restaurant but farm not yet open as early evening. Went for delicious delicacy meal at restaurant (shark's fin, bird's nest, abalone) abt 1000b.
After dinner, walked along ChiangMai Land ard 7pm....saw Olivia2 (many gals still doing makeup), Bossy

Beer Bars (MoonMaung/Tapae Gae/Kotchasan area along nice river)-
This is like Sukhumvit area where mainly farangs- lots of pool bar and some agogo bars. Went into 1 agogo bar called spotlight...quality slightly better than Sukhumvit...less fat gals than sukhumvit but quality of gals not bonkable to me.

KTV:
Aii KTV(along Moon Maung/Tapae)
Went into this KTV and gals just coming in and getting dressed up...spotted some not bad ones and was told have pay 2500b barfine to take gal out (no sex according to mamasan). Mamasan is quite young gal from Isaan.

Discos:
Mandalay (next to Aii KTV)
Have disco and a KTV/show club and apparently most popular now. Can buy drink for dancers to sit.
Bubbles
Quite a loud place in PornPing Tower but went late and place was too crowded..Many tourist farang gals..

MPs:
Sayuri (Bumrungrat Rd)-
Price 1.6-2K.
Quality bad and worse than low grade Bangkok MP. Only fishtank gals, no models or sideliners. Ambience not great with small viewing gallery and few gals. Have KTV with some gals sitting outside... spotted 1-2 average looking ones.

Pandora (Charoenmaung Rd)
Price: 1.6-2K
Quality bad and not better off than Sayuri. Have KTV also. Ambience slightly better than Sayuri.

P.S. Nabeh, accidentally walked into g*ybars in Khampaeng Rd (parallel to Chang Khlan in night baaar area). For those interested, the bars are inside a cluster of bars with names like Chicago, Naughty.

Overall, was disappointed with trip but it was only a 1 day lightning raid

Lanna Palace 2004

Hi

Lotus pang hotel is located quite far away from the night bazzar, around 15 mins journey by TUTU.This hotel has 2 wings, the main wing has a better ambience, & connected to central plaza shopping center. Not really gal friendly hotel, you might ask to pay a sub charge if you bring in gal however, if you are lucky, you can avoid by skidding the attention from the security officer. Yes,this is a safe place to stay but heading to cheong place you still need a TUTU.

Central D is located in the heart of the night bazzar, a beatiful & comfortable place to stay however, the pricing is a little bit expensive. The last stay 3mths ago cost me S$55 nett a room booked through a promotion with HSBC. A safe place to stay, convenient to shop round in the night bazzar, & walking distance to pub area. A gal friendly hotel during my stay. I dont know the situation now.

Lanna Palace is located near the night bazzar too. Not a very new hotel but there is a disco by the name of BUBBLES, very popular in CM apart from MANDALA disco. Many FL, AH QUAY & GAY. A lot of ANG MO tourist as well.
There is also few pubs around there, meal is not a problem. I have not stayed this hotel before so would not able to provide more feedback.

Hopes the above details can be a great help for you. Now till end of Feb is a great time to go CM as the temperature at night is around 20plus, very cooling. Cheers.:)

was in chiang mai in sep 05 and stayed at lotus pang suan kaew...the new wing is defintely more posh and nice and has great view of doi suthep but is more expensive too...the old wing which i stayed in is quite in bad shape...def need a refurbishment! location wise,u will need a tuk tuk to go to all the cheong places, walking is nt really an option unless u dun mind taking a 25 min walk to the nite bazzar...safety generally is ok in chiang mai and there r guards at the carpark in this hotel...

imho, this is nt a hotel i will choose if i visit chiang mai again becoz of the location...kinda out of the way...

hope the above helps

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 20 December 2005 :-

Chiang Mai's new transport system popular, but costs may force changes

Chiang Mai municipal officials have voiced satisfaction with the number of people using the city's new transit system.

Some 26 air-conditioned buses began service on two routes from the beginning of last month, while 100 red songtaew started running along another two routes.

But some changes are likely next year as the operations are losing money, partly because the songtaew service is subsidised.

Officials said that, since November, about 2,700 passengers used the air-con buses and around 200 passengers used the red songtaew each day. The number of passengers on air-con buses and songtaew differs a lot because the capacity of the songtaew is much lower.

The buses and songtaew run past 22 schools and four universities and both are crowded with passengers during the twice-daily rush hours, which start at 6.30am and 3.30pm respectively.

The municipality's 26 service buses on two routes arrive at 15-minute intervals, and make a total of 75 rounds a day. Officials said that on average 29 passengers used the buses on each round.

But Chiang Mai deputy mayor Pornchai Jinavasatira revealed that the two-month operation of municipal buses would not cover costs, as the buses earn around Bt20,000 a day while daily costs are around Bt60,000.

Worse than that, the municipality has to pay another Bt10,000 each day as subsidy to 100 songtaew enlisted as mini buses to serve on two inner routes. The municipality agreed prior to the start that it would pay Bt100 a day for each songtaew, which are supervised by the stubborn Lanna Transport Cooperative.

The results are much as municipal officials expected, that the service would be for the benefit of residents and that it would not earn it any profit.

Passengers have complained, however, that the bus routes are too long, especially the number 6 bus, which runs for two hours and a total of 40 kilometres.

Residents have also said the system is confusing - with new buses running along routes which are not publicised and songtaew running along other routes. Some suggest it might be better if one comprehensive public transport system was put in place instead of small concessions here and there.

After a four-month trial of both the air-con buses and red songtaew, an evaluation will be carried out to consider the length and route of each service so they can be fine-tuned.

The municipality plans to propose a budget to the central government - or borrow money from the Regional Urban Development Fund - next year in order to purchase more air-con buses. They will be replace the songtaew on the two inner-city routes, city bus project chief Panyapol Mongkolcharoen, said.

"The municipality and the cooperative need to work together for the most effective transit system in the city. And if more buses are launched more people will use them and reduce the losses of the municipality," he said.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 21 December 2005 :-

Night Safari free on New Year’s Eve

The Chiang Mai Night Safari will be open all night for free on New Year’s Eve.

Plodprasop Suraswadi, director of the Chiang Mai Night Safari, said 300,000 people were expected to visit the zoo on the last night of the year and public transport will be on hand to handle the extra passengers. The largest ever alms-giving ceremony will take place on New Year’s morning at Dtak Baat Tevo, he said.

The Chiang Mai municipality and the Tourist Authority of Thailand will invest Bt2 million to arrange three New Year events – an award ceremony for famous Chiang Mai natives; music concerts with fireworks; and countdown parties at Tha Phae Gate and the Chiang Mai Night Safari.

Report from The Nation dated Thursday 22 December 2005 :-

50 animals from China also held up

China has postponed the delivery of 50 animals, including a pair of white tigers, to the Chiang Mai Night Safari due to problems involving international wildlife regulations, a senior night safari official said yesterday.

The move follows Kenya’s postponement of a shipment of 175 animals for similar reasons.

Supoj Methapiwat, director of the Animal Management Office, said the Chinese were supposed to deliver the animals to the zoo on December 28 on time for the New Year celebrations.

However, Chinese officials said they could not deliver the animals as planned because more paperwork was required as many of the animals are covered under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (Cites). The delivery will be postponed for about two weeks, he said.

This will not affect tourism because the zoo already has 900 animals from 90 species, he said.

Meanwhile, the Kenyan Supreme Court in Nairobi on Tuesday postponed the delivery of 175 rare animals to the zoo, which were meant to be a gift to the government.

On November 9, Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra and Natural Resources and Environment Vice Minister Plodprasop Suraswadi signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Kenya to present Bt40 million to the African nation for national park science.

In return, Kenya was to send 175 wild animals to Chiang Mai Night Safari as a goodwill gesture and a symbol of closer ties between the two countries. The animals were to include wild cats, giraffes, hippopotami, hyenas, lions and zebras.

Kenya subsequently put the MoU on hold following a lawsuit by Nairobi and Kenyan wildlife conservation groups. They asked the courts to review the legitimacy of the MoU.

Supoj said all of those species were already represented at the zoo, and the government just wanted to get more of the animals. He said the highlight of the zoo will be the kangaroos and koalas from Australia, which should arrive in January.

50 animals from China also held up

China has postponed the delivery of 50 animals, including a pair of white tigers, to the Chiang Mai Night Safari due to problems involving international wildlife regulations, a senior night safari official said yesterday.

Chiang Mai New Year: Cold weather, warm hearts

Chiang Mai (TNA) - Thailand's famous northern resort province of Chiang Mai will see in a truly cool New Year by focusing on a New Year's countdown.

The famous northern tourist centre is expected to generate a cash flow of more than 100 million baht a day, according to Chiang Mai municipal officials.

A large number of tourists is expected to visit Chiang Mai during the long New Year's weekend--from December 31, 2005-January 3, 2006.

Latest figures released by the Northern Hotel Association show 85% of the province's hotel rooms have already been booked and Chiang Mai Mayor Boonlert Buranupakorn says the city expects full occupancy during the holidays.

He anticipated that a substantial cash flow on holiday purchases, food, and accommodations during the four-day festival would exceed Bt100 million per day -- US$2.5 million.

Highlights of the New Year countdown to be held along Tha Pae Road and Tha Pae Gate from 06:00 p.m. on December 31 to 01:00 a.m. on January 1 include a food festival with local cuisine, locally-made OTOP (one sub-district one product) food products, cuisine of the four regions of Thailand.

International cuisines will also be presented, along with an entertainment plaza presenting folk and contemporary music, a fireworks display, and a special cereminial presentation of plaques honouring nine prominent Chiang Mai personages who have dedicated themselves to society.

WEATHER : Mae Hong Son flights cancelled amid storms

All flights in and out of Mae Hong Son were cancelled yesterday because of continuous thunderstorms in the mountainous northern province. Many passengers resorted to travelling by road to Chiang Mai to meet connecting flights to Bangkok.

Even then they experienced additional delays caused by road works on the Mae Hong Son-Chiang Mai highway. Those affected included Deputy Prime Minister Visanu Krue-ngarm.

Thada Sattha, head of the provincial meteorological office, said the heavy rains were the result of a cluster of clouds and high pressure troughs covering the North, coupled with humidity pouring in from the Andaman Sea.

In Lampang, people in remote areas were suffering from the cold.

Sallek Khamjai, head of Lampang Disaster Prevention and Relief Office, said nearly 100,000 blankets were urgently needed for the elderly and underprivileged people.

Chiang Mai municipal officials have voiced satisfaction with the number of people using the city's new transit system.

Some 26 air-conditioned buses began service on two routes from the beginning of last month, while 100 red songtaew started running along another two routes.

The buses and songtaew run past 22 schools and four universities and both are crowded with passengers during the twice-daily rush hours, which start at 6.30am and 3.30pm respectively.

KARAOKE BARS IN CHIANG SAEN DECRIED : Residents call for action as seedy nightspots catering to Chinese traders spring up, threatening ancient cultural and historic values

Story by WASSAYOS NGAMKHAM – CHIANG RAI

Magnificent historic sites in Chiang Rai's Chiang Saen district stand in stark contrast to seedy karaoke bars and massage parlours which cater to the needs of Chinese traders who arrive in the district town by the Mekong river. Chiang Saen, its port as a main gateway for Thai-Chinese trade, has become a red-light district serving crew members from Chinese cargo ships around the clock.

Niti Yaprasit is one of 200 villagers in a conservation group called Rak Chiang Saen formed to protect the ancient town's cultural, historic and religious heritage from being spoiled by nightlife businesses.

He said Chiang Saen was the cradle of Lanna culture and tradition. It used to be a port for trading with towns in the upper parts of the river. As a tourist attraction, Chiang Saen was known for its religious, historical sites and the unspoiled way of life of various ethnic peoples here.

The inner district has 80 temples, mostly deserted.

But there are 12 massage parlours standing side by side, and 10 small karaoke bars. Their customers are mostly crew members from Chinese cargo ships docking at Chiang Saen port.

''We fear our children will get used to all this, and embrace it as a normal part of life,'' said Mr Niti.

He urged the temples to play a more active role in persuading children to become moral citizens.

Mr Niti said some massage parlours were set up as a front for sex services for Chinese traders, and accused Chinese of spoiling Chiang Saen's culture.

''We can easily tell them apart from local people. The Chinese like to shout at each other on the street,'' he said.

Chinese were also involved in gambling and some managed to take a tour bus to sneak into Bangkok, which could lead to illegal immigration problems.

''I want the government to consider relocating the port in Chiang Saen and to review the construction of the second port in Ban Sob Kok, 10 kilometres away from town,'' said Mr Niti.

''Local people are working with agencies to develop Chiang Saen into a more pleasant place to live. The Culture Ministry should lend a hand,'' he said.

Many land plots in Chiang Saen were owned by Chinese businessmen, some taking control of longan farms by marrying local women.

Amporn Piyaphan, 49, a shopkeeper living on the Mekong river bank, said some Chinese had set up shop to compete with local shopkeepers for customers.

''They are always regular buyers of the goods and services of their compatriots, but rarely visit Thai-owned shops except for massage parlours,'' said Ms Amporn.

Patchareeya Kawilo, 38, owner of Tata karaoke bar, said her bar caters to the Chinese because they have more purchasing power than local people.

Jang Chiew Ying, a Chinese woman who runs a grilled beef restaurant, denied her business had snatched customers from local counterparts.

''It is normal that Chinese people prefer Chinese food to Thai food,'' she said.

As for the burgeoning massage parlours which have masseuses aged under 20, Pol Lt-Col Chak Onnim, deputy police chief of Chiang Saen district, said most operate legally. Boonsong Chuejedton, mayor of the Chiang Saen municipality, admitted Chiang Saen has too many massage parlours and said the Public Health Ministry has been urged to inspect them, as some may be a front for sex services.

Pol Lt-Col Preecha Suwannasorn, chief of the Chiang Saen Immigration Office, said no illegal entry problems had been reported as measures were in place to control the movement of crew members aboard Chinese cargo ships. Pipat Sarangern, chief of the district's Land Registration Office, said Chinese land owners are few in Chiang Saen. Most land transactions are conducted among Thai businessmen.

Home-stay haven in Chiangmai

With villagers’ cooperation in conserving the environment and promoting local culture, Mae Kampong village in Chiang Mai has become a renowned home-stay destination for both local and foreign tourists who help create Bt100,000 in monthly revenue.

Phrommin Phuangmala, president of the Mae Kampong home-stay business in Mae On district, said that the village accommodated about 300 tourists a month on average, 40 per cent of them Thais.

“They want to experience local life, and they come here to stay with villagers around the clock,” he said.

What interests the tourists most is the making of the local chewy snack called miang, which is a tradition of the villagers, who sell the product in the eight northern provinces. They still make it while earning additional income from the home-stay business, Phrommin said.

“We included miang-making as part of the home-stay package, and it has proved successful. We have been voted one of the top five home-stay villages in the North, and we are drawing a host of visitors from government agencies and private operators,” he said, attributing success to the harmonious integration of environmental preservation and cultural promotion.

Wasant Phongmanee, a tour-operator, noted that the villagers were friendly and foreign investors liked mingling with them, despite some communications problems.

“The foreign tourists are impressed with the unique identity of the village, especially the miang-making, which we hope encourages the villagers to keep it up,” he said.

Chiang Mai's mass transit system a failure

A new city mass transit system in Chiang Mai has failed miserably as only an average of 3,000 people are using the service daily, causing Chiang Mai Municipality a monthly loss of more than one million baht. Chiang Mai mayor Boonlert Buranupakorn admitted yesterday that few people were using the services of the 26 city buses, offered by the municipality to relieve the growing traffic congestion and to replace the traditional red minibuses known as ''song taew.''

The new service, launched in May, needs to earn more than 100,000 baht a day in order to stay in business, but Mr Boonlert said so far it has earned only 50,000 baht a day.

On top of that the municipality is also required to pay daily compensation to 100 song taew drivers, who feared the new city buses would draw passengers away from them. The buses have so far run on only two routes. The service will later be extended to cover nine routes.

Elation as giant pandas mate for the first time

Chiang Mai - After arriving from China more than two years ago, giant pandas Xuang Xuang and Lin Hui yesterday delighted Chiang Mai Zoo officials and hordes of visitors who witnessed their first mating.

On Sunday, staff noticed the zoo's most famous residents had begun to engage in mock wrestling bouts. Later examinations by veterinarians confirmed they were ready to mate.

Suddenly, Xuang Xuang seemed to understand what he was supposed to do. He ceased his resistance, sat and leaned backward while spreading his legs. Lin Hui then moved backward and sat on top of him.

There was some movement and after awhile Lin Hui let out a humming noise, but Xuang Xuang showed little reaction. After a few minutes, the two parted, ending their first romantic encounter.

Mr Tanapat said the mating ritual was expected to continue for the next two or three days after which the two pandas will be under close observation for signs of reproductive success.

New Thai / Burmese border bridge to be opened tomorrow

Chiang Rai - The second Thai-Burmese friendship bridge, crossing the Mae Sai river, will be opened tomorrow in Chiang Rai's Mae Sai district. Burmese Foreign Minister Nyan Win and his Thai counterpart Kantathi Suphamongkhon will preside over the opening ceremony at Ban San Pak Hee.

The 400-million-baht project, which consists of the second Mae Sai bridge, linking roads and state office buildings was completed in November last year.

Burmese authorities have reportedly launched a massive crackdown recently on narcotics and illegal weapons in the border town of Tachilek to ensure a smooth opening.

Mae Sai district chief Chusak Uppanant, said the new bridge, which was built by the Thai government, was aimed at easing traffic congestion on the 36-year-old Mae Sai bridge, which cuts through commercial and residential areas.

The second Mae Sai bridge would also promote trade and transport between Thailand and Burma and link northern Thailand with China via Burma's 270-km Mae Sai-Tachilek-Kengtung-Talo route.

Mr Chusak said the old Mae Sai bridge, which leads to the centre of Tachilek in Burma, would be mainly used for tourism, while the second bridge would serve border trade businesses. ''The new friendship bridge will eventually boost trade under the quadrangle economic cooperation and the one-stop service system will shorten customs procedures,'' he said.

Meanwhile, the Thai-Burmese Township Border Committee met on Wednesday in Mae Sai district to work out details of the establishment of a permanent border checkpoint and to draft measures on suppression of smuggling between the two countries after the bridge is opened.

Thai exports to Burma through Chiang Rai have reached 2.65 billion baht while imports stand at 258 million baht.

Ethnic Shans given Thai nationality

The Ministry of Interior has granted Thai nationality to more than 1,200 ethnic Shan people, a minority group in the mountains of northern Chiang Rai province.

The first batch of 1,209 Shan people attended a ceremony Tuesday morning, vowing to be good Thai citizens and to refrain from illegal activities particularly the illegal drug trade.

Chiang Rai governor Worakiart Somsoi personally presented them their official identification cards after local authorities had conducted a survey and compiled the documents necessary to confirm their status following the cabinet's approval on the issue.

The Interior Ministry earlier granted Thai nationality to minority ethnic groups such as Akha, Lahu, and Haw Chinese.

Meanwhile, there are more than 43,000 stateless ethnic minority people in Mae Fah Luang district, waiting for the authorities to grant them Thai nationality.

Try the Karaokes such as Ten Karaoke, or Olivia 1 & 2 and the Chiang Mai Land area of small clubs there.

Also, the relatively new Penthouse Karaoke just off the superhighway.

Mandalay is a good place to pick up freelance girls if that's your game!
There are others too.

Theres more to Chiang Mai than meets the eye e.g. the soapy massage places of Sayuri, Pandora and Ping Payom Massage places provide decent set piece all in service. You can be nice to the girl and she will come visit you after work and go out with you too!

Just have to treat them right and they will reciprocate.

Then, at many restaurants, the beer promoters are there for charming and if you're a good hunter, you never know what you end up with !

A great place if you ask me - Chiang Mai.

Chiang Mai meeting centre to open in Dec 2007

The Tourism Authority has set December 2007 as the opening of the Bt1.2-billion Chiang Mai Meeting Incentive Convention and Exhibition Centre.

The centre will open in time to possibly host the January 2008 Asean Tourism Forum and in time to mark His Majesty the King’s birthday on December 5, 2007, according to Tourism Authority of Thailand governor Juthamas Siriwan.

She said the groundbreaking for project should commence shortly after appointing a building contractor in June. It would take 15 months to complete construction.

According to the TAT, the project is still being designed and architects are currently adjusting blueprints.

A progress report and construction schedule for the centre were presented last week during the Lanna Cluster Seminar, to Pracha Maleenont, tourism and sports minister. The report will also be presented to the mobile Cabinet meeting in Chiang Mai on February 7.

Juthamas said that when the centre was completed the project would be handed over to the Thailand Convention and Exhibition Bureau, which would assume the lead role in attracting events to the convention centre.

However, it is also possible that the TAT would appoint a professional and independent management team.

There have been reports that expatriate executives who have worked with exhibition centres in Bangkok and Pattaya have shown interest in the project.

The TAT expects that the new venue will be able to host the Asean Tourism Forum, which would attract 2,000 delegates from Asean countries.

However, there could be a strong lobby to instead propose Pattaya, which has a larger inventory of rooms and is just 70 kilometres from the new Suvarnabhumi Airport, slated to open later this year.

Pattaya will host the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) annual conference this April and it has hosted various trade events of a similar size and nature as the tourism forum.

Chiang Mai longan-growers turn to harvesting tilapia

More than 600 net cages containing tilapia fish along the Ping River in Chiang Mai are owned by longan-growers who have been suffering from the problem of falling prices.

Oversupply and fluctuating prices of longans since 1997 prompted growers to look for a new source of income to offset their losses.

Agro-conglomerate Charoen Pokphand Group introduced them to tilapia fish and the net-cage system.

Nongnuch Kanthiya, a longan-grower in Chiang Mai’s Baan Hua Kuong, started feeding tilapias in 1999 when her fruit dropped in price.

She said her income from longan production on five rai was unstable, so she had had to find a supplementary business to support her family.

Having started with only two cages, Nongnuch and her daughter Aporn now manage 80, raising 6,000 fish to maturity in four months, bringing in an average of Bt120,000-Bt150,000, of which Bt20,000 is profit.

“I enjoy the stable income, and I can raise two or three lots of fish a year. That, not the longans, is now my main career,” she said.

She sells her tilapias directly to the CP Group at a guaranteed price of Bt42-Bt45 per kilogram.

In the village, 30-40 longan-growers raise tilapias on the same system and are making an attractive profit.

However, the rising cost of feed meal is a major problem at Bt440 per 20kg bag, up from Bt350 in 1999.

The current and water quality of the Ping are also not as good as in the past, lowering yield.

CP has 100 such fish-farmers with a total of 500-600 cages in Chiang Mai producing altogether 70-90 tonnes per month.

The company plans to promote provincial consumption from eight to 10 tonnes a day.

Betagro Group, a leading agro-conglomerate, and Thai Lux, a local feed- distributor, are also promoting the fish, and the competition has kept prices low, said CP staff.

Tilapia farms flourish in Uttaradit, Phitsanulok, Phrae, Nan, Sukhothai, Angthong, Sing Buri, Ayutthaya, Khon Kaen, Ubon Ratchathani and Nong Khai.

I must have missed all the good places when I visited CM. Your description is opposite of what I saw. Went mostly to the known and posted places--bars near Tai Phae Gate and CEC center etc. but only saw below average gals. After walking around several times I would even settle for avg. gal but none found. Went to discos but not much there as mostly tourist (male and females) dancing and chatting.
Perhaps you could post areas of interest and directions for future reference when I may return there again. So far from what I saw, I may give CM a miss otherwise.

Bro Pirate,

Agree with you 100%. Went to Chiangmai more than 5 years ago. Nothing much sexciting there. All the girls in the 2/3 MPs CMI. Not much of a night-life. Even the restaurants and road-side food stalls close by 12.00 Midnight. Pretty boring place to go to if you are looking for sex, sex, sex, girls, girls, girls, .......

Chiangmai is more of a place to relax, visit the hill-tribes, go jungle-tracking and ride on elephant backs.etc...........

Tha'ts my 2 baht worth of opinion on Chiangmai

Bro KL69,
if you were there 5 years ago and I just got back 3 weeks ago, then apparently nothings change in 5 years.
Hopefully, some of the other bros could post better places for cheonging in CM as I am still debating if I would go back again:(
