SINGAPORE: Singapore police confirm that they have received information of a planned illegal protest this weekend at the Merlion Park, against the recent Malaysian General Election results.

The statement comes in response to media queries about the event.

Police noted there were allegations that it would allow the protest to take place, if it was positioned as a flash mob.

However, the police say this is not true and they have spoken to the organiser of the event.

Police said the organizer has admitted that no such advice was given to her, and that she has informed the police she will be cancelling the planned event.

Police also said that outdoor demonstrations for any cause generally require a police permit, whether it is a flash mob event or a protest.

The police also said members of the public who participate in such unlawful activities which threaten the peace and public order of Singapore can be arrested and prosecuted for breaking the law.

It reiterated foreigners are allowed to work or live in Singapore, but they must abide by the country's laws.

Police added that foreigners should not import their domestic issues from their countries into Singapore and conduct activities which can disturb public order, as there can be groups with opposing views.

It said those who break the law will be seriously dealt with, which may include termination of their work passes and visas.
