Since the "ThaiVisitor's Hatyai After Dark" thread started by Uncle TV ( the 'Tai Kor' of Hatyai ) had been archived/removed by the Boss due to the many flaming postings, I have decided to start a NEW thread to enable Samsters to share info on Hatyai and also to post their FRs. :D

Let's hope that everybody will practise cordiality here and that there won't be any flaming in this thread.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 8 November 2006 :-

Southern Thailand told to batten down for floods

The Public Health Ministry yesterday held a meeting of public health chiefs of 14 southern provinces to prepare for monsoon flooding, at which it announced that more than 650,000 people fell ill as a result of the recent two months of flooding.

Permanent Secretary for Public Health Dr Prat Boonyawongwirot urged some 200 southern health officials at the meeting to prepare facilities, medical supplies and mobile medical units for the flooding that is expected to result from the monsoon season rains.

Meanwhile, Ministry Deputy Permanent Secretary Manit Thiratantikanont said the recent floods that hit Central Thailand for over two months caused 654,183 people to fall ill from water-borne diseases. Nonthaburi was the hardest hit with 176,258 cases, followed by Angthong's 67,115, Ayutthaya's 61,431 and Suphan Buri's 48,667. Hand, foot and mouth disease was the most common illness at 44 per cent, followed by rashes at 14 per cent and flu at 11 per cent.

PRC Girls in Hatyai

One of the few places where you can find PRC girls is Hong Ho Restaurant in addition to Chin Long Restaurant.

The difference is that in Chin Long Restaurant, the China Girls are mainly from Yunan and Burma and are of more “kampung” standard in their dressing, appearance and also the way they walk. Whereas in Hong Ho Restaurant, you can easily see the difference that they are from other parts of China. I guess this accounts for the difference in the booking prices of the girls for a night.

Hong Ho Restaurant is in Mae Nam Hotel. ....................

Preventive Measures to Guard Yourself in Picking Up FLs

Q. What can I do to prevent myself from being cheated by conmans with fake FLs?

A. There are actually no fool-proof ways to prevent yourself from being cheated other than not picking up FLs which is quite difficult as sometimes you may arrived in Hat Yai in the night and your “little brother” just want some action. But these precautions will help lessened the possibility of you being cheated. These precautions are for people who approach you or you don’t know who they are.

1. Insist on paying the FL in your room. If the OKT or FL says they want the money upfront, tell them forget it. Be firm about it that it is either your way, or no way.

2. Let the OKT & FL be friendly with you and in turn be friendly with them. Then try to use your handphone camera to take their pictures so that if anything happens, others can know how they look like. Act friendly, saying things like you want to show to your friends back home who to look for when they come. I think you know what I mean.

3. Don’t follow any OKT you don’t know to see any girls. This is for your safety as you don’t know where they will bring you to. Let them bring the girls to see you. But if you have no intention to book a girl, don’t waste the OKT’s time and think that you want to “look see” “look see”.

4. Insist on seeing the FL’s IC to make sure she is not an illegal or underage. Ignorance is not a defense in the court of law. In fact, tell it to the OKT or FL that you just want to make sure as you don’t want to get into trouble.

5. Tell the OKT or FL that you want to keep the FL’s IC for the night and return to her the next day when she leaves. Explain to them that you have friends being cheated whereby the FL ran away in the middle of the night or worst still, stole their belongings. If they say they won’t do such things then explain that in that case, surely there shouldn’t be any problem for you to hold the IC.

Remember, when you are talking to them, be very friendly and in a non-threatening manner. If they do not agree with your terms, just smile and say it is either your way, or no way.

The tips are not full proof but it will help lessen the chances of you being cheated. . . . . . . . . .

How To Get A Good Soapy Massage ?

Q. I’ve been to Pink Lady but I find many girls there are not really attractive. How can I then experience a good soapy massage?

In Hat Yai, only Pink Lady has Soapy Massage using the air-mattress. Everybody has their own criteria on choosing an MP girl but considering the standard of looks of the girls compared to Bangkok, I normally advise fellow brothers on my method.

1. Be prepared to sit and wait for 2 hours before choosing a girl. You can always have a drink there. Why? Because in 2 hours, any girls who is working in the room would already be out. Most of us have about the same taste. So most probably the “better” girls are working. Also, you can see other girls coming in to work too. Of course if you don’t have the time, too bad.

2. When choosing a girl, the first most important thing is the girl must have the look and body you can f**k. Even if she gives the BEST soapy, but is not your type you can f**k, also no use unless you don’t intend to f**k. You don’t need to choose an MP girl like choosing a girl for your overnight booking. You’re not going out with her or spending 24 hours with her. As long as you feel you can f**k that girl, it’s OK.

3. The girl must not be skinny. She must have “flesh” and good boobs as that is essential in the soapy massage. No use if the girl has no breasts, no bum, skinny thighs, etc. You get bones massaging you.

4. After choosing the girl, let the girl come out to your table where the “captain” will introduce her to you. Do some small chit-chat and bluff a little by telling her things like your friends recommended her to be one of the best services not like some girls who rush thru. You can even fake a name and ask her whether she can remember “James from so & so who was here 3 months back”, etc. Hey, if she can’t remember, so what? She’ll still be pleased that she was recommended.

Having had your small talks, head to your room to have a good time. With this 4 pointers, I believe that you will enjoy a good soapy massage.

What You Can Expect From The WL You Book ?

Q: If I book a working lady from the farms in Hat Yai, what can I expect from the working lady?

A: Basically, when you booked a working lady from a farm, the time starts from whichever time you book her until the next morning about 8.00am. During this period, this is what you can expect.

1. The girl must give you at least 2 sessions if you want them (some brothers only go for a session) by the next morning before 8.00am. You cannot say you were too tired and wants a morning shot at 9.00am even if you did not have any session with her during your bookings as your booking time officially ends at 8.00am. This is your entitlement. Anything more will be up to the girls.

2. For each session, the girl will give you the 3 in 1 service, - a bath, BJ and FJ. Anything else is up to her. Whether she allows you to kiss, french, 69, catbath, backdoor or whatever is entirely up to her unless it was pre-agreed before the booking.

3. During your booking, the girl will follow where you go if you want her to with certain limitations. You cannot expect her to go with you to Pink Lady and let her wait for you while you have a soapy massage. Also, it is her perogative whether she wants to partake in your activities. That means, she will follow you to a restaurant but up to her if she wants to eat or not. She will follow you to a trad massage parlor but up to her if she doesn’t want a massage. She will follow you to a disco or pub but up to her if she doesn’t want a drink or doesn’t want to pop in an estacy pill.

when Nirvana told me how to deal with TV is becos it is something very sensitive in which I will not reveal at this pt of time. I will see hw the person treat me & then i will react..There is always a saying "AN EYE FOR AN EYE".
Don ever think tat I am using his rep to deal with people cos firstly Nirvana & I had been discussing on this investment issue for the longest time...Whenever he meet up with me his first phrase is "So Hw? Did u get your money back?"...

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 15 November 2006 :-

Baht hits seven-year high of 36.40

The baht rose to a seven-year high yesterday, as capital inflows helped push the unit to as much as 36.4 against the dollar.

Dealers said the baht, which has gained 11.2% against the dollar this year, rose to 36.41 in intraday trade before easing on profit-taking and intervention fears.

The baht closed at 36.400/430, compared with 36.50/52 on Monday.

''The Bank of Thailand intervened steadily throughout the day to help keep the baht over 36.4,'' one local dealer said.

''The baht is gaining not only due to steady capital inflows, but trade surpluses on export earnings.''

Dealers said the baht would next see resistance at 36.30 to the dollar, a level last seen in 1999, although based on current trends, the baht was likely to hit 35 before the end of the year.

The baht traded in a narrow range around 25 to the US dollar up until July 1997, when speculative pressure and a host of domestic factors forced the central bank to float the currency. The event triggered an Asia-wide financial crisis and the baht hit 56 in January 1998 before beginning a slow but steady recovery.

Compared with the end of October, the baht is 3.05% stronger against the dollar, versus a 2.09% gain against the euro and 2.88% against the Japanese yen.

According to the central bank, non-bank capital inflows in the first eight months of the year totalled $9.72 billion baht, including $4.1 billion in direct investment, $890 million in debt capital and $3.86 billion in investment capital.

I had also quote some very useful info from your Blogsite.

Because of this many Samsters had deducted point from me ( > 12 points ) because of their ‘deep hatred’ for you.

BTW, can you please up me to compensate for the points deducted.

bros here share share ur comments...This is an awareness to all investors
who had dump their money in the web bizness...

The 11 investors to his web business who put their hard-earned money in should hold a meeting with him and ask him these questions:

1) Each person pays $2,500 for 1 share of the business. There are total of 20 shares, which means that the total capital investment should be S$50,000. Thaivisitor give a written promise that he will take up the remaining share that is not taken. In the end, 14 shares has been taken up according to his email on 8 May 2006. That means the total amount of money he had collected investor is S$35,000. Now, these investor will have to check whether did he put up S$15,000 to take up the remaining 6 shares as he had promised. Ask for bank statement as proof to show that S$50,000 has been deposited. If not, why? Even if all had been spent, there will be a record that the money had been deposited before. Ask for the record.

2) For start-up expenses, it is stated that start-up assets required are a computer, printer, scanner, fax machine and a pick up truck. Pls take note that this web biz is not a sole proprietor, but a corporation with 11 shareholders. Listed in his start-up expenditure on assets include:
a. 450,000baht on a pick-up truck
b. 50,000baht on office equipments (computer, printer, scanner, fax machine)
Now find out where is the truck that he is suppose to purchase for the business? Where are the office equipments? Ask for proof of purchase. If not, then where does the money goes to?
P.S. - all investors will remember that during his group briefing, he had justified buying a pick-up truck. His own personal pick-truck is his own property and has nothing to do with the business. If he wants to sell his own pickup truck to the corporation, then he should ask permission form the investors. In the briefing, everyone got the impression that he is buying a separate second-hand pickup truck, am I right?

3) Other start-up expenses:
a. Domain registration - 100,000baht
b. Web Development - 120,000baht
c. Office accessories & Marketing Materials - 75,000baht
For (a), check on proof of payment.
For (b), Thaivisitor state that the web development has been outsource to an indian company, Promarkit. Why then is he doing it himself? Is he going to pocket the 120,000baht for web development?
For (c), Ask to see the marketing materials. If it is not ready, when will it be and what is it?

3) It is now evident that Nirvana has managed to get a refund from the breast enhancement scam, after he realizing that something is not right. Will you able to get back your refund if the money are not being spend yet, and is in the bank? By contract, you only have 50% share, so the most you can get back is 50% of what you pay. If Thaivisitor refuses, then what avenues are there for you to get back your hard-earned money? If all the money have been spent already, then ask for proof of expenditure.

4) In the plan, the website is supposed to have 54 advertisers for the year 2006. Now is mid-Nov 2006 - so how many advertisers are there, and what is the revenue from them?

That is exactly what his cronies are trying to defend him here. There is nothing wrong with people making money upfront. But to say that buying his noni juice for tsunami fund is pure lying, just like denying that he ever take commission secretly.

In the briefing, everyone got the impression that he is buying a separate second-hand pickup truck, am I right?

wa piang! samster very gullibile hor...:D I should try and earn some frm here too.:D

Two more additional points:

1. Thaivisitor has yet to put up the commission rates that he charges for farm visits and hotel booking. Why?
2. Did he keep an account of all the commissions taken so far? If not, why? Since he is using company's resources like the pickup truck and the website for the customers, then all commission taken should be accounted for and 35% be accrued to all the shareholders (14/20 * 50% stake)

I am Sure he got a 555 booklet that u ppl dun know...

From what I see, basically he is just making money out of it for his own pocket only. When all S$35,000 of investors' money had been used up, he will just declare that the website is not making money and move to close it. Remember, the ownership share ratio is 65/35, so he has the right to do whatever he want, even though he didn't fork out a single cent for it. In the end, he will still have his pickup truck and office equipment, all sponsored by these investors. Very clever right? ;)

Like this you better ask " How about all the makan-makan (breakfast, lunch, dinner + supper) paid by all the Samsters ? Did he declare it to the Thai Income Tax Dept as a 'payment in kind' benefits enjoyed by him. "

Mr Romantic is right to say that Mr Romance is a multi head snake.

Remember last time when Mr Romance was still a newbie? He asked so many fucking questions in the BKK thread and tried to carry my balls by giving me the Heavenly King title.

He also tried to be friendly with me in the forum. Bro here bro there , want to treat me drinks etc.... now he comes in here to badmouth me.

He even added my points.

Uncle KTL... i remember a long time ago we compare notes... even on Olivier massage i tell u liao got 40 baht difference... but u refuse to believe me its your prerogative... say what you want...

At that time I didn't know that Uncle TV was taking commissions behind our backsides and I thought that he was just being 'friendly' to all Samsters who come to Hatyai .........

I remember long time ago Uncle TV brought a group of us ( me, TD, DeKuip, DeKuip's Japanese friend, etc ) to Oliver Massage and Uncle TV 'put on a show' by telling LOUDLY in front of us that he will ask the Boss whether he can get any 'discounts' for us for the massage

Now I know better .......... " Once bitten twice shy "

So, it is confirmed 100% that Uncle TV earns commissions from ALL Samsters that he bring around Hatyai to look for WLs, massage, entertainment, book hotel rooms, makan, bonk the 'Hatyai Tigress', etc, etc, etc..............

A friendly advice

Please be very, very alert when travelling to Southern Thailand during the coming New Year holidays

Report from The Nation dated Friday 15 December 2006 :-

PM concerned about southern terror attacks during New Year holidays

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont admitted Friday that he is worried that the insurgents would step up attacks during the long New Year holidays.

"I admit that I am concerned about this," Surayud said, responding to a reporter's question as to whether he feared that the insurgents might step up attacks during the festival.

"We don't want to see it happen. It will depend on cooperation of the people to help us monitor the situation and inform us. Without cooperation from the people, it will be difficult to solve the problem," Surayud said.

Report from The STAR dated Thursday 21 December 2006 :-

PETALING JAYA : Thai authorities have barred IDD roaming services for ALL Malaysian-registered handphones in the southern provinces of Narathiwat, Yala and Pattani.

Celcom Eastern Region General Manager Datuk Sulaiman Ahmad said Malaysian phones could not be used in the 3 provinces but IDD roaming was still available in the other provinces.

The Thai move was apparently due to suspicions that some bombings in Southern Thailand had been triggered by Malaysian-issued pre-paid handphones.

An industry source added that another reason was that the Thai authorities wanted to prevent those living in Southern Thailand from using the services of Malaysian telcos as the mobile rates were much cheaper.

Report from The New Straits Times dated Friday 22 December 2006 :-

No more free entry for Thais from Jan 1, 2007

THE days when Thais can enter Malaysia without travel papers along the border are numbered.

From Jan 1,2007 they need to have proper travel documents.

And if they are driving, they must ensure their vehicles satisfy Malaysian regulations.

The new requirements were announced by Deputy Internal Security Minister Datuk Mohamed Johari Baharum at the lobby of Parliament House yesterday.

The move was seen as necessary after an assault on a Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs enforcement officer at the Bukit Kayu Hitam Immigration complex on Dec 2 by a group of suspected diesel smugglers.

Following the incident, a meeting involving the Prime Minister’s Department’s National Security Division, Defence Ministry, Customs, Immigration Department, Road Transport Department and Malaysian Fisheries Development Board identified several areas where security could be beefed up.

This included the new arrangement for vehicles and people coming into the country from the Thai side of the border.

Thais are now allowed unrestricted movement of up to 2km inside Malaysia. This is to allow for easy movement of goods on both sides of the border.

“However, there are those who have misused this privilege and have entered further into Malaysia,” he said.

He said those who wanted to travel more than that distance ( 2 kms ) would need the International Circulation Permit.

Johari said motorcycle taxis transporting pillion passengers across the border from Thailand would be banned.

On my last trip to Hatyai some time back, i had this wonderful experience that i would like to share.

I stayed in Merlin Hotel, as this is my final day there, waiting for flight to return home in the evening. Was feeling restless, so went to a hair saloon nearby hotel for a hair wash. there were 3 of them working there, one wash my hair, second one help me blow dry n style, third one do nothing. later found out she does not work there, should have realised that as she was in shorts n T. finish blowing(the hair), paid n left.

walk to nearby shop to get some beer back to hotel, walk pass the saloon on the way back. decided to try my luck by asking the gals if they care to joint me for a drink in the room, the gal in short actually responded. gave her room number blar blar...did not expect her to turn up anyway.

finished 1st can of beer, ding dong... open door, standing b4 was the gal in shorts, but she is wearing low cut jeans n tight fit top, only very light make up, maybe only lipstick. she roam the room, ask me the usual Q, never go bath? massage? gals?...then she found this CD cover in the dustbin n gave me that LOOK...keke

we chat for a long time n told me she cant drink much, she actually mix beer with soft drink. later found out that she work in KISS, so you can guess that she must be of certain quality. waited patiently to make my move, she love frenching, painted she proper till she grab my hair. she gave the best BBBJ i ever had n the rest was history...VERY SEXTIFIED indeed.

in the end have to pay hotel xtra half day for late check out, both of us were still drunk, we exchange contacts n gave she some pocket $ as she told me that she will not be working for the night.

Report from The Nation dated Saturday 23 December 2006 :-

PM warns of violence in the South during New Year 2007

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanonton Friday warned of large-scale attacks by Islamic militants in the deep South during New Year holidays.

The Prime Minister have been informed by local security units that large-scale attacks before, or after the New Year are possible as militants are currently assembling their forces, according to the report submitted to Surayud.
--- KatoeyNewsNetwork

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thai security agencies went on high alert in the three southernmost provinces amid intelligence reports that militants were planning major attacks during the New Year celebrations.

"Plans have been prepared to counter the expected attacks in several areas by the insurgents during or after the festival," Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said.

Security agencies said January 4 marked the third anniversary of a major raid on an armoury in which militants made off with more than 300 MI6 rifles. The incident was a major humiliation for the government of then prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who could no longer deny the political underpinnings of the incident and began to officially acknowledge that a new generation of Malay separatists had surfaced.

"We should not underestimate the opponent. We have to be prepared," Surayud said yesterday.

He compared the conflict to boxing, saying the fight is still far from over but that "we are evaluating our fighters as the fight continues."

"If I owned a boxing club, of course, I'd want to win," added Surayud.

The weather in thailand good and occasionally rains but not serious like it happen in malaysia. i was in hatyai from 6 till 13 jan and stayed in new season hotel on 6 till 10 jan. On the first day in hatyai, i was admitted in the hospital due to sudden pain on my left stomach. i dont really know how i got it but it was my first time got it. The last time i remembered was having supper at opposite lee garden at 3 am. i ate the muslim fried chicken.

I was in pain in the hotel room for almost 2 hrs and vomitting and severed pain on the left part of the stomach, fortunately, the hotel manager send me to the hospital for trreatment. By the way, i suppose to go krabi on 8 jan but cancelled due to my unstable condition. I have already booked the hote
l online but the agent told me cant refund. :(

By wed onward, i was feeling better and decided to krabi on the following day. I went to this place (Opposite Old lee garden - Diana club) to book lady so that i can bring her to krabi. Its a small lane and have few karaoke there. I saw few gems there and there they only start from 6 pm onward. Price more expensive from 2500 to 3500 baht.

On returning back from krabi, i meet our samster prolink and cyberaid. Most likely i will be back again on May or i will be going to chiangmai instead. Hope we can meet next time

Bro roslee7,

Thanks for the info and the very interesting FR above

I think you had severe stomach ache probably because the fried chicken was cooked/fried 100%.

I used to eat the Muslim fried chicken almost every day when I was in Hatyai many, many years ago but later avoided eating it because it is deep-fried and makes me cough after eating it. Also, deep-fried food is not healthy and bad for your health.

I used to love these fried chicky legs and would never miss it whenever I was in town. The crispy skin and the tamarind fragrance damn nice. But I would only go for those that were freshly fried. Best time was in the morning and joining the breakfast crowd...could see many ordering a piece of nicely and freshly fried chicky leg plus a packet of sticky rice. Went along very well with the chlli sauce. What about a cup of hot milk tea after that?....yummy.
?
Never had I kena dummy upset as I would never go for those re-cycled types especially late into the night. Same goes to those fried big head prawns. The stale oil had aready put me off.

And what about a hot bowl of noodle or kuay teow soup in the deep of the night? There was this very nice beef kuay teow stall outside Emperor Hotel. Isit still there?

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 25 January 2007 :-

Thieves steal ATM with B2.5 million inside from Hatyai bank

Songkhla : Five thieves made off with an automatic teller machine (ATM) with nearly 2.5 million baht inside in Songkhla's Hat Yai district yesterday. Police said the Krung Thai Bank's ATM machine placed in front of the Social Security Office (SSO) building on Chotiwiriyakul 3 was ripped out and taken away in the back of a pick-up truck about 2am.

Footage from the building's surveillance cameras showed five people involved in the robbery.

Security guard Sathaporn Nimpradub, 46, said five robbers, two armed with 11mm and 9mm pistols, held him at gunpoint before making him lie flat on the floor and binding his hands and legs.

Then the thieves dislodged the machine, placed it on a pushcart, took it out to a pick-up truck waiting outside the building and hoisted it on to the back.

Mr Sathaporn said the entire operation took about 20 minutes.

The security guard managed to free himself a short time later and informed police immediately.

Police said the robbers got away with 2,450,000 baht in cash which had been put in the machine by bank staff on Tuesday evening.

More than 50 investigative and crime suppression police officers were summoned to hunt for the thieves.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 29 January 2007 :-

Bus mafia preys on travellers in Hat Yai

A mafia-like operation has been entrenched at the Hat Yai bus terminal in Songkhla province for two decades and complaints about the problem have been ignored.

Bus terminal chief Pairat Thongthep admitted yesterday he had no idea how to deal with the illegal bus operators.

He said they lured unknowing travellers into paying more for a substandard service.

The bus terminal provides official bus services, standard fare prices and standard buses. The service is available for passengers who buy tickets at the booths of the state-owned Transport Co and its concessionaires.

However, the illegal operators pounce on unwary travellers, who never make it to the terminal or ticket booths.

"They usually tell travellers that all tickets for Transport Company buses are sold out," he said. "They say they have tickets for extra buses for sale at similar prices and that their buses are the same standard as the company's regular buses."

Travellers buy the tickets only to find out later that the buses are in poor condition and at times they are forced off the vehicles before reaching their destination.

Sometimes the illegal operators buy legal tickets and then sell them to travellers at higher prices.

While frequent travellers would not fall victim to the trick, they found the touts irritating.

Mr Pairat said these operators have about 10 "tour" offices just next to the Hat Yai bus terminal and about 15 employees wandering around picking up victims. This had been going on, untouched, for two decades, thanks to protection from people in various uniforms.

Staff at the bus terminal used to warn travellers about the illegal opeators, but received threats and intimidation.

"Recently our drivers were assaulted by these gangsters. A complaint was filed with police but nothing was done.

"Everyone knows these people have influential backers. We know who. All colours [of uniform] control these illegal companies," he said.

He had repeatedly sent petitions. The latest was addressed to the president of the Transport Company labour union, of which Mr Pairat is a member. He said the Transport Co board includes senior military and police officers as well as executives of the Land Transport Department whose authority should overcome local influence.

"I cannot fight it alone... The problem gets worse during peak travel times like festivals. I sympathise with cheated passengers who must travel aboard substandard buses which are not insured and whose crews will abandon them outside of towns," Mr Pairat said.

A man identifying himself as Nop said he used to be part of a team preying on travellers inside the terminal. They made 100 baht per victim.

Porn, a taxi driver, said the tour companies paid a commission of 50-100 baht for passengers sent their way.

Hat Yai Mayor Prai Pattano said the municipality would leave the problem to the Transport Co.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 2 February 2007 :-

Crown Prince visiting deep South, including Hatyai

His Royal Highness Crown Prince Maha Vajiralongkorn, accompanied by HRH Princess Srirasm, arrived in Hat Yai district in Songkhla last night, beginning a four-day visit to the restive South. The Crown Prince will hand over 80.9 million baht in donations, raised from the recent special flight he piloted, to hospitals in the South to buy medical equipment.

His visit will include the three southernmost provinces - Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

He was met at Hat Yai airport by Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont and army chief and chairman of the Council for National Security Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin.

Gen Surayud announced that school administrators had been authorised to begin school breaks ahead of schedule for safety reasons.

Meanwhile, two ice-cream vendors were killed, and one of them beheaded, in separate attacks in Pattani and Yala yesterday.

Vendor Weerachai Uttaraniyoung, 45, was shot eight times by two drive-by gunmen as he was driving his motorcycle, and then decapitated, in Ban Gueya in Pattani's Muang district yesterday.

The other vendor, Thanakrit Thammasuth, was shot on the Yala-Kota Baru highway in Yala's Muang district.

Gunmen also shot two rubber tappers, killing a man and seriously injuring his wife, in Yala's Bannang Sata district.

In Yala, militants seriously wounded a deputy commander of border patrol police forces as he travelled to a border patrol police school in Yaha district.

In the same district, a village headman's assistant was shot and wounded.

In Raman district, the 41st Ranger Regiment began training a 72-member all-female ranger force at Wang Phraya military camp in psychological operations, negotiation and crowd control.

The course is a response to the new insurgent tactic of organising women and children to rally in protest for release of detained suspects.

In Pattani, a patrol from Ingkayutthaboriharn military camp was ambushed with a roadside bomb in Mai Kaen district. No one was injured.

Stolen ATM found buried, without the cash

Songkhla - An automatic teller machine (ATM) stolen from Hat Yai nearly two weeks ago was found buried in bushland in Chana district yesterday - minus the 2.4 million baht it had contained.

Five robbers were filmed by a security camera as they removed the Krung Thai Bank machine from outside the Social Security Office in Hat Yai district in the early morning of Jan 24.

About 100 police descended on Ban Kan Sam Khok village yesterday. They found the ATM, with its safe detached and emptied, buried near a coconut plantation.

They also found marks showing the machine had been dragged from a nearby plantation workers' hut where traces of cutting equipment, cigarette butts, a loincloth and gloves were found.

A search in the vicinity found two suspects who police said confessed to the crime and to conspiring with four others who were still at large.

Police said Phakdee Chablee, 45, a coconut plantation worker, claimed he had only opened the hut for the robbers. The other suspect, Loh Kasemsuriya, 48, lived in the house near the one-metre-deep hole where the ATM was buried.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 23 February 2007 :-

Support for rebels 'now at 10,000' - Network could strike capital, says Boonrawd

Insurgents in the deep South can draw on the support of an estimated 10,000 young people they have moulded into a ''united front'', and could threaten the security of Bangkok, Defence Minister Boonrawd Somtas said yesterday.

Gen Boonrawd said insurgents previously could count on less than 100 people and he attributed the dramatic increase to long-term neglect of the region.

The defence minister was fielding questions at the National Legislative Assembly (NLA) about the bombings in the deep South on Feb 18.

He affirmed that students from the South were free to move to Bangkok, and that intelligence units were watching suspected militants believed to have entered the capital.

He admitted the authorities in the South still could not bridge the gap between locals and the state, despite considerable resources, including 10,000 soldiers, 10,000 policemen, and another 17,000 people the Southern Border Provinces Administrative Centre (SBPAC) could call on.

''We do not know them. We do not know who is working against us. As long as they mingle with ordinary people, it's difficult to tell them apart,'' he said.

For more than 10 years, the insurgents had been selecting young people for training. The new recruits were taken when they were about 12 years old, he added.

Pranai Suwannarath, head of the SBPAC, was among the first to attribute the Feb 18 explosions to young people. The SBPAC has been trying to access remote villages since it resumed operations on Jan 1.

In the South, sources said the Fourth Army was trying to build bridges with religious leaders in particular in a bid to form its own ''united front''. The army was also working with defectors to shore up knowledge about the insurgents' networks, operational methods and structure.

But he said the army had so far only learned about low-level supporters, such as those who attempt to hinder authorities by laying spikes and other obstructions.

''So far we have not been able to reach the leadership and their thinking. So prevention is difficult. We learn only that there will be an attack but not where or how,'' a source said.

Defectors do not tell all because they have sworn an oath of secrecy, he added.

So far, the Surayud Chulanont government's political offensive had been successful, including the cooperation with his Malaysian counterpart Abdullah Badawi. But on the ground, there had not been as much progress as there should have been, said the source.

At the NLA, Lt-Gen Waipot Srinual, commander of the National Intelligence Agency, slammed the government's failure to curb the violence that was demoralising operational officers and local people.

At the same time, he said the gap between state authorities and local people was being perpetuated by instigators working to widen the divide.

They formed a ''third group'' in the region, besides people who are for and against violence, he said.

Prime Minister Surayud yesterday admitted that the government had done little to curb the violence in the South over the past four months.

Local cooperation was key to stamping out the insurgency and help would be sought from Malaysia to turn the situation around, he said. Any idea of making the troubled region a special administrative area should be taken up by the next government, he added.

Defence spokesman Maj-Gen Pichasanu Putchakarn said the Defence Council was concerned the debate on a national religion may be used as a campaign against the government. He said the defence minister had emphasised the need to be more active in intelligence gathering.

Meanwhile, the interior minister described Wednesday's gun attack against an entourage of humanitarian fund raiser Thanpuying Viraya Chawakul as random.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 24 February 2007 :-

Violence affects tourism in Southern Thailand

Earnings from tourism for the three troubled southern border provinces – Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat -- are projected to decline further in the second quarter of 2007 if violence related to the southern insurgency continues, according to a leading think tank's report.

Renewed violence in the three provinces has become more fierce since its beginning in 2004, forcing tourism, both by locals and foreigners, to decline 18 per cent to 1.15 million visitors in 2004 and
deteriorating further to about 800,000 persons in the following year, according to a report issued by Kasikorn Research Centre.

Last year, tourism business in the area picked up slightly with the number of tourists visiting the three provinces remained almost unchanged with revenue earnings up marginally to about Bt1.86 billion, it said.

More than 800,000 tourists are expected to visit the three provinces this year while earnings was projected to increase to about Bt2 billion if there is no major violence in the trouble-plagued area.

The latest (and one of the most severe) onslaughts to shake the three provinces and nearby Songkhla province ocurred on February 18 – the Chinese New Year – when eight persons were killed and more than 60 persons were wounded in a series of bombings, arsons, and shootings thought to have been the doing of militants operating in the region.

The Kasikorn Research Centre (KRC) report noted that Songkhla's Hat Yai district, known as paradise for nighttime entertainment and shoppers, would see its tourism business this year grow in comparison to 2006.

KRC said some 2.7 million tourists are anticipated to visit Hat Yai in 2007, up 8 per cent from 2006, while tourism earnings are to grow 12 per cent to around Bt14.5 billion from last year.

However, it said if the violence in Songkhla improves in the first quarter of 2007, Hat Yai would lose about Bt800 million in tourism earnings. If the situation does not improve until the second quarter, it would suffer loss from tourism earnings around Bt1.9 billion.

There are signs that impact from the violence could continue into the second quarter of 2007 and tourism in Hat Yai would decline 13 per cent from an earlier projection of 2.7 million tourists, while earnings would tumble to Bt12.6 billion from Bt14.5 billion.

The earlier projection was made by the Centre before the Chinese New Year.

The report urged security officials to plan more comprehemsive protective measures for tourists during the upcoming Songkran festival, or Thailand's traditional New Year, in order to boost tourist confidence.

Sneaky way to cross border

PUTRAJAYA : Overstaying foreigners are said to be using the Bukit Kayu Hitam border checkpoint to sneak out of the country on the pretext of buying duty free goods.

This came to light when three Chinese nationals, comprising a couple and another man, all in their 40s, were caught at Bukit Kayu Hitam Customs, Immigration and Quarantine complex area late last month.

“They overstayed in the country from 302 to 465 days,” Immigration Department enforcement director Ishak Mohamed said yesterday.

He said the three, who were charged and fined a total of RM38,000 by an Immigration court three days ago, went to the duty free zone after alighting from an express bus bound for Haadyai which they boarded in Kuala Lumpur.

“They also had flight tickets from Bangkok to Xiamen (China) with them,” he said.

The husband claimed they wanted to surrender themselves to the authorities at Bukit Kayu Hitam.

“But all of them were mainly staying in Kuala Lumpur and did not surrender themselves there,” he said, adding that his officers had been put on alert for overstaying visitors who tried to escape this way.

“We are also trying to find out if there is an organised group smuggling people through our border checkpoints,” Ishak said.

Hatyai restaurant in a spot after 'wormy' steak claim

Two female students who say they were served worm-infested steaks at a Sizzler's branch in Songkhla's Hat Yai district on Valentine's Day yesterday sought advice from the Songkhla Consumer Protection Office for their lawsuit demanding Bt2 million in compensation.

Ramkhamhaeng University students Kasitinart Noomkaew, 23, and Pitchaya Pathumwal, 20, had the questionable steaks at the Lee Garden Plaza branch of the American restaurant chain on February 14 and were hospitalised for severe diarrhoea later that day.

Kasitinart's mother Waraporn Noonkaew accompanied the two students to the Songkhla Consumer Protection Office to file their complaint yesterday. Waraporn said they hoped to get advice and assistance.

The girls are demanding Bt1 million each.

They submitted reports from Sikarin Hospital saying they had been diagnosed with food poisoning and had suffered from severe diarrhoea as well as a tape recording of a conversation between them and the restaurant manager.

Waraporn told reporters about the incident on February 25 and said the restaurant denied assistance to the victims.

However, the manager of the Sizzler branch, Supawadi Kaewsen, yesterday said she did not deny assistance or refuse to take responsibility, but that the matter was no longer in her hands.

The company's insurance division in Bangkok is working "to assist the girls", she said, declining to give further details.

Supawadi said the "problematic menu" was a promotion and had been cancelled right after the incident. In a statement, Sizzler (Thailand) said: "All ingredients received at Sizzler are temperature-controlled from our suppliers to our stores.

"This temperature control extends through our store as our staff continues to monitor the temperatures of all food and ingredients in our kitchen and at our salad bar.

"At the grill, each and every item cooked has its temperature checked to ensure that we serve our customers products that meet and exceed all international food safety guidelines."

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 14 March 2007 :-

Bangkok, deep South on security alert

A security alert is in effect for Bangkok and the South today, when the Barisan Revolusi Nasional Melayu Pattani (BRN) separatist movement marks the anniversary of its formation in 1963.

Pol Maj-Gen Adisorn Nonsi, acting chief of the Metropolitan Police Bureau, said the city was fully prepared to counter any attack.

A strategy codenamed "Jan 50" was in force, combining the operations of the police and the military. Areas vulnerable to a strike were designated by three classifications - general alert, high alert and extra-high alert.

Locations on general alert are communities, bus stops and shopping areas. Those on high alert are government buildings and embassies. Residences of important figures are on extra-high alert.

Pol Maj-Gen Adisorn said road checkpoints would also be set up in specific locations to ensure normality.

Pol Col Utasin Litruengdet, chief of Chana Songkhram police station, said vending stalls were banned on the tourist-haunts of Khao San road and Rambutri road. Bags carried by people visiting these areas may also be searched.

An intelligence source said BRN leader Masae Useng had ordered 300 young men who had received insurgent training to launch attacks in the deep South.

Somchart Pimthanapoonporn, chairman of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Hoteliers Association, said more security guards were deployed and additional surveillance cameras installed at hotels in the province.

Security at Hat Yai railway station was also beefed up.

Army spokesman Col Akkara Tipparoj urged southern residents to carry identification cards as they may be asked to produce them on the spot.

In Narathiwat, a combined force of police, military and administrative officers set up road checkpoints downtown. Uniformed and plainclothes police are also patrolling the major business district, shopping venues and hotels.

Phatthalung governor Suthep Komolpamorn told a meeting with local administration officials to tighten security after leaflets were distributed warning of bloodshed and sabotage aimed at government buildings in the next day or two.

In Yala, forensic police said at least 10 people had colluded in the arson at Ban Rueneng school in Yaha district on Monday night.

Also in Yala, a pickup truck carrying 10 people, mostly Buddhists, was ambushed by gunmen in Bannang Sata district yesterday. One person was killed and six others injured as they were returning from a funeral rite in Pattani.

The 5th Infantry Division begins joint border patrols with Malaysian forces today, continuing until June 26.

Council for National Security spokesman Col Sansern Kaewkamnerd said an extra 20 companies of rangers were sent to the deep South to help maintain peace and order.

9 passengers massacred in van ambush in Yala

Yala - Muslim insurgents massacred all the nine passengers in a van in this southern border province in cold blood Wednesday morning, police said.

Police quoted the van driver, who managed to flee on foot as saying that the van was stopped by a falling tree on a village road in Yala's Yaha district at 9 am.

The van was taking nine passengers from Yala's Betong to Songkhla's Hat Yai district.

The driver told police that when he saw the tree blocking the road he tried to make detour to flee from the scene but an unknown number of insurgents jumped out of roadside bushes and blocked the van.

The driver left his vehicle and ran for his life.

He said the insurgents shot the heads of the nine passengers in point blank.

Eight of them died at the scene and the other died at a hospital.

Among the slain passengers were two children aging nine and ten years old.

Amulets to 'help protect' Buddhists in South

The security forces in the troubled South have announced their intention to produce spiritualist trinkets in a bid to protect the Buddhist minority from harm.

Colonel Manas Khongpan, deputy director of the Internal Security Operation Command (Isoc) in Yala, said yesterday that Jatukham Rammathep talismans would be made for Buddhists in the predominantly Muslim region.

The famous animist amulet is believed to have magical power to protect its holder from violence. Although it has no relation to Buddhism, many Thai Buddhists believe in the talisman's power and are prepared to pay large sums for them.

Isoc in Yala will produce the amulets at a temple in the province by May and then bring them to a blessing at Nakhon Si Thammarat, the original home of the amulet, Manas said.

The Boun Ban Dan amulets, meaning the "power of virtue", will be sold to Buddhists and security officials in the region.

The southern Buddhist population of around 300,000 is often the target of violence carried out by Muslim militants, who are determined to chase them out of the area, Manas said.

"The production of the Jatukham amulets will give moral support to Buddhists and help sustain the religion," the colonel said, as if the amulets were linked with the faith.

Many Thai Buddhists mix animism with their religious worship.

Any profits from amulet sales will be spent containing violence and the money will be managed transparently, he said.

A spate of violence erupted in the deep South at the beginning of 2004 and around 2,000 people have been killed since.

It continued yesterday in Yala's Bannang Sata district as militants sprayed bullets at a passing pickup truck, killing one person and injuring six.

Police said some 10 Buddhists on the truck were attacked while travelling back from a funeral in neighbouring Pattani province. Some of the group briefly returned fire before retreating.

Report from The Nation dated Wednesday 14 March 2007 :-

Smog crisis in North could linger for weeks

High pressure may keep haze in air till April 2007, but Cabinet refuses to impose emergency moves

Weather experts have warned that the haze blanketing the North could linger until April as harmful dust levels hit the highest level since air quality tests revealed deteriorating conditions two weeks ago.

An abundance of fires lit in rural areas has been largely blamed for the pollution.

The haze is costing Chiang Mai alone up to Bt30 million a day in lost tourist income, the chairman of the northern provinces' chamber of commerce Narong Tana-nuwat said.

Despite the worsening situation, the Cabinet yesterday turned down an Environment Ministry proposal to declare the region an emergency control zone, in a bid to empower authorities to tackle the source of the problem.

Government spokesman Yongyuth Maiyalarp said yesterday the Cabinet had been told by the Meteorological Department's northern bureau that the smog could persist until April and that special monitoring may be needed until June.

The Pollution Control Depart-ment (PCD) reported yesterday that the level of dust particles smaller than 10 microns in Chiang Mai's air had reached 284 micrograms per cubic metre. The standard level for these particles in the air is 120 micrograms per cubic metre. Currently, provincial authorities have limited power to tackle the crisis.

Chiang Mai's provincial environment office asked restaurants and street vendors yesterday to temporarily stop using barbecues.

"These businesses share some responsibility for the smoke in the air," department head Phuchong Insomphan explained.

The city's authorities turned on all fountains for 24 hours to increase humidity and today fire trucks are due to spray water into the air in the city centre.

The Environment Ministry proposed that the Cabinet declare the emergency controls to enable provincial governors to ban all forms of combustion.

At present, governors can only ask people to stop burning rubbish, farm waste and clearing scrubland, which are believed to be the major causes of the haze.

If the Cabinet had agreed to the move, it would have been only the second time powers authorised under the 1992 Environmental Protection Act had been used. The first time was almost a decade ago when then premier Chuan Leekpai used the legislation to ban inland shrimp farming on the Central plains.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 17 March 2007 :-

Attacks continue in south despite curfew

YALA – A series of insurgent attacks persisted in Yala and Narathiwat provinces on Friday, although the Fourth Region Area imposed curfew in two districts of Yala on Thursday.

Samart Chanlek, 53, a Provincial Electricity Authority worker, was shot in his stomach by an unidentified gunman on Friday morning in Rueso district. The seriously wounded victim was rushed to hospital.

Mr. Samart was climbing up a power pole to fix it when he was attacked by a gunman in a drive-by shooting, according to investigators.

In Yala's Raman district, four gunmen armed with automatic rifles and shotguns fired on a teashop, wounding four patrons, who were taken to hospital.

The suspected insurgents also strewed tripod spikes on the roadway to prevent pursuit by the authorities.

Imposed Thursday, one day after the massacre of eight van passengers in Yala's Yaha district, the curfew does not appear to have reduced violence in the region.

Additionally, in Narathiwat's Rueso district Thursday night, suspected insurgents smashed and destroyed a waiting area pavilion for passengers and smashed signage at the Salowbugidyuelae train station.

The police also found a dummy bomb in black plastic laid on the railway.

Eyewitnesses at the station said they saw at least 15 young men destroying public facilities late Thursday night, but they dared not to call for help from neighbours to stop the vandalism.

The police said they believed the vandalism was done by militants in response to the curfew imposed by the Fourth Region Area Army.

In Songkhla, more than 2,000 people wearing yellow T-shirts gathered in front of the city hall to denounce attacks on innocent people.

They issued a statement, condemning the insurgents who killed nine van passengers in Yala on Wednesday.

The statement said the killing is inhumane and called for the insurgents to stop attacking innocent people.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Thursday 22 March 2007 :-

Southern extremists learning from bin Laden

Islamic separatists in the deep South are increasingly adopting al-Qaeda's Islamic extremist tactics, including gruesome beheadings and seemingly random attacks on civilians.

The increasingly bloody violence shows the growing Islamic influence on the separatists, Gen Watanachai Chaimuanwong told the French news agency AFP in an interview at his office in the prime minister's Government House compound.

The Muslim-majority region along Thailand's southern border with Malaysia has suffered outbreaks of separatist violence ever since Bangkok annexed the area a century ago.

But Watanachai, the top security adviser to army-installed Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont, said that while previous generations of rebels were mainly motivated by nationalism, today's militants showed a greater tendency toward religious extremism.

"This is a group of young turk militants who want to challenge the old groups. Their operations are more gruesome and more violent because they have imported those techniques from Al-Qaeda and the Taliban, with the goal of creating a pure Islamic state," he said.

"They want to create a state called Pattani Darusalam" which would include Thailand's Muslim-majority south and two northern states in Malaysia, he said.

Attacks in the region have become more frequent, and the violence more gratuitous, since the military seized power in Bangkok six months ago.

An ice cream vendor was beheaded in broad daylight last month, his body left slumping on his cart. Militants beheaded another Buddhist man two weeks ago, setting his body ablaze on a roadside and leaving his head in the middle of the road a kilometre away.

As a former deputy chief of the army - who now wears dark business suits instead of military uniforms - 63-year-old Watanachai has dealt with the insurgency since the latest unrest erupted in January 2004.

The militants have never claimed responsibility for any of their attacks, and have never made any demands of the government.

Watanachai said security forces believed the militants had formed a new group called Rundi Kumpulan Kecil (RKK), which translates roughly as "Small Guerrilla Group," recruiting students from Islamic boarding schools as well as unemployed youths.

"There are up to 20,000 of these militants active in the three southern provinces, but their recruitment is slower now because the government has imposed strict controls on the boarding schools," he said.

Watanachai said the government expected a surge in violence after Thailand and Malaysia agreed last month to step up cooperation to end unrest that has left more than 2,000 dead in the past three years.

The rebels have also struggled to recruit new members from outside of the provinces of Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala, the former army chief added.

As a result, he said, the rebels had a hard time staging attacks outside the region.

However, he cautioned that authorities were now linking the insurgents - but not their cause - to deadly bombings in Bangkok on New Year's Eve which killed three people and wounded more than 40.

He insisted the attacks were not linked to the southern unrest, saying someone connected to the political turmoil in Bangkok had hired the militants to stage the attacks to further their own interests.

"The explosive devices were the kind commonly used in the south, and the people who made the bombs were militants who worked in the south, but they were hired to mount the attacks for another purpose," Watanachai said.

Militants in the south operate through a loose structure in which the actual attackers never see or interact with their commanders, he said.

"They would be asked by telephone to kill or behead someone. When they leave their house, they are empty-handed, but they go to pick up weapons at a pre-arranged drop point, without knowing who their commander is," he said.

In some cases, the young fighters are provided with drugs or cash for conducting attacks, Watanachai added.

New recruits spend up to 30 days in training in the deep jungle along the border, in caves, or even in abandoned buildings in towns, he said.

Watanachai warned the militants may be planning more spectacular attacks, including an assassination plot against a "prominent person" to draw attention to their cause.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 23 March 2007 :-

Hat Yai outlook goes from bad to worse

Hat Yai - Tourism conditions in Hat Yai are going from bad to worse, with some hotel operators leaving the area altogether, according to Nimitr Chaichiratikul, the president of the Tourist Business Federation of Songkhla.

The violence that re-emerged in the three southernmost provinces in 2004 has had an increasing effect on nearby Songkhla, where Hat Yai is the main commercial centre.

Bombings that took place in Hat Yai last year worsened the tourism outlook, and recent violence has made businesses even more pessimistic, Mr Nimitr told a meeting held yesterday by the Tourism Authority of Thailand.

Tourism and Sports Minister Suvit Yodmani chaired the meeting, at which businesses as well as officials were invited to voice their concerns.

Mr Nimitr estimated that Songkhla had lost about 15 billion baht since 2004. Foreign tourist arrivals are estimated at 600,000 to 700,000 this year, substantially down from one million a year before 2004, he said. Revenue is likely to be worth only 10 billion baht this year.

Foreign tourist arrivals declined to 720,826 in 2005, partially because of flooding, compared with 852,234 in 2004 and 1,044,900 in 2003. The number increased marginally last year to 720,860.

Tourism earned the province about 12 billion baht last year, a rise from 11.7 billion baht a year earlier but down from 14 billion baht in 2004. Foreign tourists, many of them Malaysians, contributed nearly half of Songkhla's tourism revenue.

Sawai Na Pathalung, executive chairman of Pink Hotel & Complex and adviser to the Thai Hotel Association of Hat Yai, said about seven three-star hotels were recently taken over by Singaporean investors.

The owners of more than 10 hotels are likely to be forced to sell this year because they could not afford to pay debt given the sharp drop in occupancy.

Normally, the occupancy rate of hotels in Hat Yai averages about 65%. The rate fell to only 20% after the latest bombings in September last year.

Hotel operations are generally able to survive only when their occupancy rate stays above 50%, Mr Sawai said.

''We desperately call on the government to help address the problems as soon as possible to restore the confidence of tourists about safety in order to boost the industry and consumption in the province,'' he said.

''Installing CCTV (closed-circuit TV) in public areas is also necessary.''

The government is also being urged to support soft loans with interest rates of 1.5% to 2% to hotel entrepreneurs in order to maintain their businesses.

According to the Songkhla TAT Office, the province has 167 hotels with a total of 11,777 rooms, 137 tour operators, 630 tour guides, and 370 restaurants.

Court interrupts brothel love story

Singapore - A man who bought freedom for a Thai woman trapped in a Singapore brothel so he could marry her has gone to the High Court to stop the deportation of his wife-to-be, news reports said on Saturday.

Wai Keen Weng, 31, and Amue Athu, 24, were due to wed last year, but Amue was arrested in October when she tried to extend her social visit pass. She was jailed for one year after pleading guilty to returning to the city-state despite being banned from the country.

Wai has been battling to free her and stop the deportation. His lawyer, RS Bajwa, petitioned the court on Friday for Amue's conviction to be quashed, The Straits Times reported.

Bajwa argued that she should not have been banned from entering Singapore in 2004 as she was a victim of human trafficking who had been coerced into working in the city-state as a prostitute.

Bajwa also said that Amue had unwittingly pleaded guilty because she could not understand the court proceedings. She belongs to the Akha hill tribe, which lives in the province of Chiang Rai in northern Thailand and has its own language.

The case was adjourned until Tuesday.

Wai, who works in his parents' advertising business, first met Amue on his birthday in May last year, the report said. He helped her escape from the brothel two months later.

"Meeting her on my 31st birthday was the best present and hopefully she can be released in time for my 32nd" in May, he was quoted as saying.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Saturday 14 April 2007 :-

Security tight for southern revellers - Lively celebrations, but road toll mounts

People in the restive deep South, unlike their compatriots across the country, celebrated Songkran yesterday amid tight security for fear of possible rebel attempst to rock the traditional New Year festivities.

Several hundred police and soldiers were deployed to provide added security for people attending events held by government authorities in the three border provinces of Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani.

The Police Region 9 Bureau and the Fourth Army, which are responsible for security in the three provinces, feared insurgents might disguise themselves as revellers to mingle with the crowds and launch attacks, causing heavy casualties.

To prevent any such incidents, the military warned people to celebrate only in areas where soldiers and police were present to ensure their safety.

Security in Yala was tighter than in neighbouring Pattani and Narathiwat, with extra security and roadside checkpoints set up around Muang district, security officials said.

Yala's celebration came two days after the grisly murder of 26-year-old Patcharaporn Bunmas, who was shot and set ablaze on Wednesday in Muang district.

Days before, a car carrying Muslim students back from a funeral in Yala's Bannang Sata district was shot at by village defence volunteers, killing four people including a 12-year-old boy.

In neighbouring Pattani and Narathiwat, celebrations were conducted with similar caution as in Yala.

Local authorities in Pattani and Narathiwat said they had received threats that the two provinces would be targets of specific attacks during the festival. They instructed people to celebrate Songkran for only one day and return home before dark for safety reasons.

However, Sirichai Kitticharoen, chairman of the Pattani Chamber of Commerce, said he was satisfied with security measures in place for revellers.

" I felt secure when I went out to see the people in Pattani throwing water at each other," said Mr Sirichai.

He said that he was certain those who did not come out to celebrate the festival had stayed home out of fear because of the ongoing violence in the province.

Around the rest of the country, people seemed to be celebrating Songkran with the usual vigour.

At Khao San road in Bangkok, a traditional Songkran wetspot for Thais and foreigners alike, and several northeastern provinces along the Mekong river, including Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom and Sakon Nakhon, Thai and foreign revellers were in full swing with the famous water throwing celebrations yesterday.

The Tourism Authority of Thailand expects around nine billion baht to be spent nationwide over the Songkran period.

But as millions of people took the opportunity to celebrate the traditional New Year, the less-pleasant side of Songkran also lived up to expectations, as dozens died and hundreds were injured in road accidents.

The Interior Ministry's Road Safety Centre said 57 people died and 720 were injured in 632 reported accidents across the country yesterday.

Phitsanulok and Nakhon Ratchasima have reported the highest death tolls so far, with five casualties each, followed by Nakhon Sawan with four deaths and Chiang Mai with three.

The centre said no casualties were reported in 43 of the country's 76 provinces yesterday. Chiang Mai has recorded the highest number of road accidents so far, with 27 incidents since Wednesday, followed by Udon Thani and Si Sa Ket.

Trains to Yala suspended - Buddhist protest rally entering its sixth day

The State Railway of Thailand (SRT) suspended train services between Yala and Narathiwat yesterday following an attack that injured two people aboard a train in Narathiwat's Rueso district on Saturday. According to SRT spokesperson Monthakarn Sriwilas, the state enterprise's board resolved to suspend services following an ambush on a train that was on its way from Sungai Kolok in Narathiwat to Nakhon Si Thammarat.

The gunfire wounded the train's engineer and a five-year-old girl. Both were hit in the leg but are recovering.

Ms Monthakarn said the service would be suspended for the safety of the SRT's property and passengers. The suspension will continue until the SRT considers the situation safe enough to resume services, she said.

The suspension also affects train services between Sungai Kolok near the Malaysian border and provinces to the north including Nakhon Si Thammarat, Surat Thani, Songkhla, Yala, Phatthalung and Bangkok. Trains heading south from those stations will now terminate in Yala.

Thousands of locals who normally depend on train services between Yala and Sungai Kolok had to hire a limited number of local trucks instead yesterday.

Kluesong Sama-ae, a grocer from Rangae district, Narathiwat, said people would be hit hard if train services did not resume soon.

Locals, especially traders who need to pick up supplies from Sungai Kolok and Malaysia, cannot afford the cost of hiring trucks to transport themselves and goods, she said.

Railway stations between Yala and Sungai Kolok were more or less deserted yesterday, manned only by railway officials and police to prevent more attacks. Not a single train had been left at Sungai Kolok railway station itself.

Sungai Kolok station chief Alawi Umar said passengers who had bought tickets would be refunded. However, he said there was no need for panic as he expected train services to resume today.

Security officials believe Saturday's attack was in retaliation for the arrest of seven militant suspects from a raid in the district on the same day.

Rueso police chief Pol Col Banlue Chuwet said the suspects had already been sent to the Ingkhayuthboriharn military camp in Pattani province for interrogation.

Authorities believe one of the suspects is responsible for launching a large number of attacks, the district police chief said. He also believed that local people were behind the train attack.

Elsewhere, the violence continued yesterday.

In Rueso district, a 70-year-old rubber tapper was shot dead and burnt on his way back from shopping in Aiyada village. The pillion rider-cum-gunman also took the victim's motorcycle, police said.

In front of the Yala provincial hall, a protest by Buddhists continued for the fifth day yesterday to demand decisive solutions to the violence. The gathering was sparked by the murder of Patcharaporn Bunmas, a recent graduate who was shot and burnt in Muang district last Wednesday.

Relatives have decided to indefinitely delay her cremation, which was scheduled for today.

They and other protesters want to increase the pressure on the government, they said. Protesters have formed an organisation and are asking relatives of other victims of the southern violence to join their protest and place the victims' bodies with that of Patcharaporn in front of the provincial hall.

They have also demanded a direct discussion with Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont. Government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalap said the prime minister would visit the far South from April 19-21.

Insurgents kill 70-years-old,fire at train - Surayud refuses to defer trip toregion on Friday

A 70-years-old Buddhist rubber farmhand was shot and burned by suspected Islamic militants as he drove his motorbike home from a market in Narathiwat's Rusoh district yesterday.

The incident happened days after a similar attack in Yala.

Meanwhile, the railway service on the Narathiwat-Sungai Kolok route has been suspended after suspected insurgents shot at a train on Saturday.

However, Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said he still intended to visit the South on Friday as planned.

Suspected militants shot Thongmee Maiman three times in the head and torso before setting his body on fire and taking his motorcycle. Passers-by were able to prevent the corpse from being badly burned, police said.

On Wednesday, Patcharaporn Boonmart, a 26-year-old Buddhist woman, was shot and burned beyond recognition in Yala province while Council for National Security chairman Sonthi Boonyaratglin was in the region.

About 200 angry villagers paraded her remains through the streets of Yala town to demand that Sonthi, who is also the army chief, put an end to the unrelenting bloodshed in the South.

Meanwhile, government spokesman Yongyuth Mayalarp yesterday denied a news report that Surayud would visit Yala today to attend her funeral and cremation. He said the PM would visit the region on Friday.

State Railway of Thailand (SRT) public relations chief Monthakan Sriwilat said the stoppage of the Narathiwat-Sungai Kolok service would last for at least two days, yesterday and today. A service will be provided only to and from Yala. Passengers who had booked tickets can get refunds at Bangkok's Hua Lamphong station.

Because of the railway service suspension, passengers have turned to hiring two-row passenger trucks that usually provide services between districts and provinces.

Since yesterday morning, there were were not enough trucks to meet demand, especially for those who wanted to go to Malaysia.

On Saturday, gunmen shot at a train between Yala and Sungai Kolok, injuring two people.

Southern trains suspended rest of week

Train services between Hat Yai district in this southern province and Sungai Kolok district of Narathiwat bordering Malaysia will remain suspended for at least five more days.

All 14 regularly scheduled passenger trains heading for Sungai Kolok district remain suspended for the third consecutive day on Tuesday since they were halted indefinitely on Sunday, after a train headed from Sungai Kolok to Nakhon Si Thammarat province was ambushed by insurgents in which an engineer and a young girl were shot and wounded in the legs.

Trains now stop at Yala station and passengers wanting to continue their journey to Sungai Kolok must travel by bus, truck or other means.

Senior officials of the State Railway of Thailand on Tuesday were reported to have conferred with the Fourth Army Region over an increase in security measures for the railway workers, after the railway labour union in Hat Yai submitted a letter to the Fourth Army Region commander on Monday, urging the southern army better protect passengers and crews.

The fourth army commander was reported to have promised the army would come up with extra security measures for train services within five days.

Trains heading to Sungai Kolok are expected to resume no later than April 22 when the Fourth Army Region can guarantee safety.

Latest update from ThaiVisa.com: "At least 9 injured, not killed, one of them is a woman; and Thai officials played down the seriousness of the incidents, claiming that those so-called bombs were just milo-tin filled with explosives..."

Looks like they are creating havoc in HDY now..

i hope they never do any cover up. they like to cover up most of the information. just like the 2000 flood where quite a number of pple die in the disco during the flood but was not reported.

7 bombs rock Hat Yai, 10 injured

Hat Yai, Songkhla - 7 coordinated bomb attacks in this trade and tourism town Sunday night wounded 10 people, one seriously.

According to the police, most of the bombs were hidden in garbage bins and detonated nearly at the same time starting 9.00 pm. But one bomb was hurled into JB Hat Yai Hotel and another exploded in front of Hat Yai Garden Hotel.

The first explosion was in front of Thong Sia Siang Tueng Foundation on Supasarn Sungsang Road at about 9 pm, according to Songkhla Police chief Pol Maj Gen Phaithoon Pattanasophon.

Then six other explosions occurred including in the toilet room of Nai Nung Restaurant on Thammanoon Withi Road, drug store near Kochon Restaurant, in front of Big C Super Store and Tesco Lotus Super Store shortly after the first explosion.

Army chief and chairman of the Council for National Security (CNS) Gen Sonthi Boonyaratglin said he had ordered security agencies concerned, including the Internal Security Operations Command, to control the situation.

"The bombs were only small ones and did not cause much damage."

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 28 May 2007 :-

13 hurt as bombs rock Hat Yai - Blasts meant to cause panic, says Gen Sonthi

Hat Yai - 7 bombs rocked downtown Hat Yai late last night, injuring 13 people, one seriously, police said. The explosions were the first such attacks in Hat Yai in nearly 8 months since militants detonated 6 bombs almost simultaneously in cafes and bars across the city, killing 4 people and wounding dozens more last September.

The first device was detonated at around 9.00pm and six others exploded at almost the same time, police said.

All locations targeted in the bombings were in Hat Yai city, the business centre of the southern region.

The bombs went off at a house shrine in front of Big C Superstore, Lotus Superstore and Ratri drugstore on Suppasan Rangsan Road, the Tong Siang Tueng intersection, Pab Nai Nang restaurant on Thammanoonvithee Road, an area opposite Hat Yai Garden Home Hotel, and the JB Hotel.

Most of the devices were hidden in motorcycles and garbage bins. However, at the JB hotel an attacker threw an explosive device into the hotel grounds.

Police tried to calm down tourists and residents in the city, who were plunged into panic. The injured, including children and a pregnant women, were rushed to nearby hospitals.

Police Region 9 commissioner Jettanakorn Napeetaphat said he had set up a task force headquarters to react to the attacks believed to have been carried out by separatists. He ordered police to set up checkpoints around Hat Yai in a bid to arrest the perpetrators.

Mobile phone signals were also jammed as a safety measure to prevent any possible detonation of further devices using cell phones. A bomb disposal team was called in to search for any hidden bombs.

The team was able to destroy one device at Lotus hypermarket before it exploded.

''This is the first time our mall was bombed. We're checking on our security cameras,'' said a Lotus administrator.

Besides the injuries, the bombs also causes damage to property, including cars.

The chairman of the Council for National Security, Sonthi Boonyaratkalin, said yesterday that the scale of the bombings indicated that the attackers only wanted to create a disturbance but not cause widespread damage and injuries.

Gen Sonthi, who is also chief of the Internal Security Operations Command, the main agency responsible for security nationwide, called on residents to help authorities keep their eyes out for suspicious activities.

Authorities said the bombing was similar to explosions last September that injured 70 people. The bombs went off around the same time and used the same tactics, they said.

Last year the first device was detonated at around 9.00pm and the other five were set off between five-minute intervals.

The places hit last year were Big C, the Lee Gardens Hotel on Sanehanusorn road, the Monkey Pub on Thammanoonvithee road, the Odean Shopping Mall on Niphat Uthit road, in a cinema toilet near the Diana department store on Sripoovanart road and the sixth one also on Thammanoonvithee road.

Hat Yai international airport was also hit by explosions on April 3 last year.

Explosions rock Hat Yai

9 hurt as 7 coordinated blasts hit superstores, hotels; Sonthi says no need for curfew, asks public to remain alert

7 coordinated bomb attacks left Songkhla's popular tourist centre of Had Yai reeling last night. They injured 13 people, including one women whom police said was in a serious condition.

Police said it was apparent the attacks were aimed at creating chaos rather than killing people or causing extensive damage.

The first explosion happened in front of the Thoengsia Siang Tueng Foundation at about 9pm, witnesses said.

Most of the victims of the attacks came from this explosion. Police said the youngest victim was an 8-year-old boy.

Within 20 minutes another six blasts had gone off at a number of locations across the southern city. The targets were the Tesco Lotus and Big C Super Stores, Garden Home and JB hotels, Nai Nang restaurant and Phesat drug store.

Most of the bombs were placed in garbage bins. However the one at JB Hotel was thrown into the lobby.

The 13 people injured in the blasts were taken to three hospitals in the area - Ratyindee, Had Yai and Songkhlanakharin.

"Considering the circumstances of the blasts, it would appear that the bombers were intending to create a disturbance rather than deaths and damage," Army Chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratklin said last night.

"All of the bombs were smallish ones and created no serious damages in most spots."

Sonthi said the bomb attacks were meant to merely disrupt the public and that "he knew that they were different from previous attacks". He did not explain.

Sonthi called on the Had Yai public to keep alert to future attacks. He said even though there were seven bombings no curfew was needed.

Sonthi said he would not try to analyse who were behind the bomb attacks.

Two suspects were caught shortly after the bomb attack at Big C super store, police said.

They would not release any details about the composition of the bombs or whether they were set off by mobile phone or other devices. But as a precaution, the authorities cut all mobile phone transmissions in Hat Yai town just in case there were further bombs.

Last night's bombings were the third serious attacks in Hat Yai since the insurgency broke out in the deep South in 2004. The last one was on September 15, 2006 when 5 people were killed and about 60 hurt in a series of 6 explosions at 2 shopping malls, hotels and other night spots.

Somchart Phimthanaphoon-phorn, president of the Hat Yai-Songkhla Hotel Association, said last night's bomb attacks were not as serious as the two previous ones and should not cause serious damage to the local tourism industry. Fortunately, he said, the attacks occurred on a Sunday night when many weekend visitors had already left the town, he said.

Darm Sukhonsap, director of the communication division of Tesco Lotus, said the bomb exploded in front of Tesco Lotus's Hat Yai branch where close circuit cameras were monitored the area. The CCTV footage captured by the cameras could provide police with more information.

The first big bomb in Hat Yai occurred on April 3, 2005 at Hat Yai Airport, Carrefour Superstore and various night spots in town, killing two people and injuring 30.

Hatyai sure dead now. Been there for more than 20 years. Was there 10 days ago after an absence of 7 years. I thought it was tolerable then. The farms are now concentrated in few areas. Mostly by WLs who have remained in business. I only recognized one OKT now. It was several then. I met mine ex WL again after 8 years. Despite her age, she still the prettiest of the lot.

Bored, I rented a bike and rode to Songkla. Skidded on the way back and had severe lacerations. Thai roads can be dangerous. No pussy for me so I went to Phuket and become a regular tourist while my knee healed. Good thing it didn't so I flew back yesterday. Otherwise I would be in HDY and most probably be at one of the 7 locations that kenna bombed.

No need to go back there again. Our Geylang backlanes have Thai WLs that are better looking than in HDY, minus the bombs. You get one or 2 fuck per booking from them anyway. Thanks to bros who think WLs should be treated as GFs so touch touch only. For what fuck!

Pink Lady complex have only or mostly fat gals. Same as Phuket Christin massage. An earlier bird flu must have swept Thailand. Symptoms included increased girth and heavy hips. Rare to see slim and shapely gals now. 20 years ago, its the norm, maybe the girls are younger then, all below 18. Then there are no HIV so its pok!pok!pok! with bare cocks at the wettest cunts you can find. Then its to the clinic at the last day for painful VD jabs. Fucking needle so huge while they pumped in 20ml of antibiotics through your rump.

Hatyai now good for ancient massage - 180b for 2 hrs. Forget the jua-ken massage. Lots of fakes sifus claiming to learn from their mums. Big con. Foot massage everywhere now. Just throw stone in any direction
.
Bak kut teh everywhere too. 60bts for bits and pieces excluding rice. Not worth it. Order other things and ask for 30b worth. That is the standard price for healthy portion of any food. Book your massages and rooms through local tour agents. I get mine from the lovely ladies at Grassland-lovely tours. No need to bargain and can tip the savings to the massage ladies.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Tuesday 29 May 2007 :-

Hat Yai blast victim dies

The first victim of coordinated bomb attacks on the major southern city of Hat Yai on Sunday night has died in hospital.

Suchart Sae-tang, 60, who was injured in the blasts on Sunday night, died at the Hat Yai hospital from critical wounds to his skull and brain.

4 of the other 12 injured persons were released from hospital yesterday, medical authorities said.

National Security Council secretary-general Prakit Prachonpachanuk said he believed the blasts were aimed at stirring unrest rather than killing people - although 13 people were killed and wounded, several critically.

Police, meanwhile, said eyewitnesses have helped them sketch a bomb suspect. Investigative teams were scheduled to meet on Tuesday morning to discuss the case.

Hat Yai blasts seen as political - New bomb in packed wet market kills four

The Council for National Security (CNS) and the acting police chief were at odds with the Special Branch yesterday over who was behind Sunday night's bombings in Hat Yai.

Pol Gen Seripisuth Temiyavej and a CNS spokesman both refused to rule out a political motive, while the Special Branch was confident the seven explosions were linked to the southern insurgency.

Meanwhile, another bomb went off at a market in Saba Yoi district of the same province early yesterday, killing four people and wounding 26.

CNS spokesman Sansern Kaewkamnerd said after a meeting of the council that the low power of Sunday night's blasts led to the suspicion that insurgents might not be the ones planting the bombs.

Unlike previous bombs planted by insurgents in the deep South, the explosions in Hat Yai seemed intended to stir up trouble, rather than targeting lives of people.

Col Sansern said while the explosions could have been set by insurgents, they could also be the work of people who were losing political power. But with only sketchy evidence, he refused to link the Hat Yai bombs to the New Year explosions in Bangkok.

Pol Gen Seripisuth said it was too soon to conclude insurgents were to blame. ''The explosive devices were different from those used in the far South,'' he said.

Seven explosions went off in Hat Yai about 9pm, injuring 13 people, two of them seriously. Four of the injured were released from hospitals yesterday.

Deputy police chief Pol Lt-Gen Adul Saengsingkaew was ordered to travel to the city, in Songkhla province, to try to shed light on the blasts. Pol Gen Seripisuth promised police would have the answers within days.

A security source in Hat Yai said evidence from the blast scenes showed the bombs could be the same type as went off in Bangkok on New Year's Eve.

Police Region 9 chief Lt-Gen Jettanakorn Napeepat sided with Pol Gen Seripisuth, saying the bombers' goal was only to cause irritation instead of targeting people.

Police artists were sketching pictures of suspects and they were waiting for images from security cameras, he said, but refused to give more detail.

Pol Lt-Gen Rapeepat Palawong, commander of the Special Branch, was firm in his belief southern insurgents had planted the bombs in Hat Yai.

He said a police intelligence report two days before the blasts had warned of two youngsters from the three southern provinces sneaking explosive devices into Songkhla.

''That's the only information we had and we couldn't dig deeper than that,'' he said.

The Sunday night blasts could be insurgent revenge for the arrest of a woman on Saturday, he said. The woman was suspected of involvement in the bombing in Hat Yai in September last year.

An explosion at crowded wet market in Saba Yoi district, Songkhla, about 3.30am yesterday killed four people and wounded 26. The dead included two children, one only four years old.

Chief of the district police Pol Col Thammasak Vasasiri suspected the homemade bomb was triggered by signals from a mobile phone on a parked motorcycle.

Songkhla Chamber of Commerce chairman Chavalit Kalumpaheti admitted the Hat Yai explosions would probably hurt the tourism industry, which was only slowly recovering from September's airport bombs. He called for urgent measures to ensure the safety of residents and tourists, before visitors left for good.

The city has 400 entertainment venues and almost 10,000 hotel rooms. It is a popular place for Malaysians and Singaporeans. Hotel occupancy has dropped by 54% over the past three years.

President of the Hat Yai and Songkhla Hotels Association Somchat Phimtahapoonporn said more hotels would close down if the situation in the city did not improve soon.

Report from The STAR dated Tuesday 29 May 2007 :-

Explosions hit Haadyai spots favoured by Malaysians

ALOR STAR : Several locations usually frequented by security officials and Malaysian tourists were the targets in the recent explosions that rocked the suburbs of Haadyai in southern Thailand.

The JB Hotel and Garden Home Hotel that were targeted in the attack on Sunday were “designated” hotels for security officials from Malaysia and Thailand.

The Nai Nang Restaurant, where two bombs exploded in the toilets, was a popular restaurant frequented by Malaysian tourists.

Four other targets that were hit were the Siang Tueng Foundation, Tesco Lotus, Big C Superstore, and Phesat drug store.

According to Thai police sources 13 people were injured in the incident. None of the victims were Malaysians.

Police have detained two suspects, believed to be from southern Thailand, to facilitate investigations.

However, separatists from southern Thailand denied any involvement in the bombing.

“We have asked around. It was not done by any of us. Even the RKK (Ronda Kumpulan Kecil) denied any involvement,” said a separatist leader. RKK are insurgents who operate in small groups.

Separatists claimed that those with a political agenda probably masterminded the coordinated attacks.

“We believe the bombings are linked to the Constitution Tribunal ruling on May 30. The fate of the Thai Rak Thai and Democrat parties, which face election fraud charges, will be known on that day.

“Those with a political interest want to create chaos days before the ruling,” said the separatist source.

Thai police also suspect that the attacks were politically motivated, but they had not ruled out separatist involvement.

Thai army chief Gen Sonthi Boonyaratkalin was quoted as saying that the bombers intended to create a disturbance rather than cause deaths and major damage.

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 29 May 2007 :-

Sunday's blasts in Hat Yai deal further blow to Thai tourism

The series of explosions in Hat Yai on Sunday has had an immediate effect on tourism. Travellers from Singapore and Malaysia have cancelled trips, while those from Australia and the Middle East are considering postponing.

There are calls for government assistance to boost local and foreign investor confidence and that of consumers.

State agencies and other organisations yesterday agreed the attacks would hit tourism but expect a limited overall economic affect.

Bank of Thailand Governor Tarisa Watanagase admitted confidence in the South has been low for some time, but the bombs aggravate the psychological effects.

Her deputy Atchana Waiquamdee said the bombs worsened fragile confidence and would dampen tourism in the region, which had started to recover at the beginning of the year.

She expected a similar impact on the industry to that felt after the 2005 Hat Yai International Airport bombing. Trade will remain sluggish, as usual, she said.

Association of Thai Travel Agents (ATTA) president Apichart Sankay said hotels, restaurants and entertainment businesses in Hat Yai would see a slow down. Many of the centre's visitors are from Singapore and Malaysia and have already cancelled bookings weeks ahead. Moreover, many arrivals cut short visits and are returning home, he said.

Singapore and Malaysia are the region's biggest markets and often make weekend visits to enjoy entertainment.

According to Apichart, the number of local meetings and conferences in Hat Yai had gradually declined as a result of political uncertainty in the South.

"Hat Yai has been in its low season for months. Average hotel occupancy is below 40 per cent. These explosions will reduce that," Apichart said.

He added seasonal tourists - particularly from Australia and the Middle East - worry about the blasts. Many are taking a wait-and-see approach and others will cancel trips.

"So far, ATTA has not received any cancellations from overseas,'' Apichart said.

ATTA reported it was business as usual at tourist destinations such as Phuket, Samui and Krabi. Arrivals are increasing.

Hat Yai and Songkhla Hotels Association president Somchart Pimthanapoonporn said the explosions would damage tourism in the long term.

"It's just the next morning and the tourists are gone. I believe the business will be hit hard in the long term, too," Somchart asserted. Hotel occupancy is less than 20 per cent and the blasts could chop that by 5 per cent, he said.

Hat Yai hotels have increased security measures.

Thai Chamber of Commerce and Board of Trade chairman Pramon Sutivong noted the blasts could hamper economic growth in the South.

The chamber's chairman in charge of deep-South economic development Somkiat Anuras said Songkhla wanted its 12 districts not in the government's special economic zone to be included.

The chamber will ask the government to provide more soft loans to hotels and manufacturers.

The chamber wants to meet with Deputy Prime Minister Kosit Panpiemras to discuss South worries. The chamber and 107 associations will demand measures to boost consumer confidence "because the economy relies on sentiment".

Federation of Thai Industries chairman Santi Vilassakdanont said the bombs would definitely affect tourism and other economic sectors.

"People in the area want government confidence boosters for life safety and asset security rather than tax incentives for investment," he said.

He suggested the government speeded installation of closed-circuit television cameras at Hat Yai and enforced regulations such as banning motorcycle pillion passengers.

Deputy Industry Minister Piyabutr Cholvijarn believed the blasts would not affect the overall investment picture.

Foreign investors usually adopt a long-term plan, he said. More worrying for them is labour skills, government policy and investment support.

In the first four months of this year, the Board of Investment received applications for tax breaks for Bt200 billion in projects. Machinery imports totalled Bt120 billion.

Piyabutr said throughout the year the combined value of all applications would reach Bt500 billion.

Report from The Nation dated Tuesday 29 May 2007 :-

Bombs 'like those in Bangkok' - Blasts created a lot of noise but not much physical damage, police say

The latest spate of bombs in Hat Yai will certainly shove this southern commercial centre further towards a crisis and prolong its attempt to regain its status as a popular destination for Malaysian and other tourists.

This culturally rich town where Malay, Chinese and English languages are spoken, has never been the same since it was rocked by bombings in April 2005 and September last year.

But unlike previously, Thailand's top security officials have refrained from speculating that insurgents from the deep South were behind the attacks on Sunday night.

This differs greatly from before, when police were quick to point the finger at a group of zealous militants for a string of high profile attacks, including the April 2005 Hat Yai Airport bombing, and the blitz in Yala three months after.

Police named Faisal Haji Isma-ae and Abdul Kamae Saleh as the heads of this militant cell.

Because of the choice of targets and the scale of the damage, authorities said the 2006 Hat Yai attacks had crossed a new threshold. The six simultaneous bomb blasts killed four and injured about 70 people in crowded areas popular among local and foreign visitors. The implications went far beyond the Muslim-majority South, where the ongoing violence has claimed more than 2,200 lives since January 2004.

Some speculated that the 2006 "hit" was a sign of things to come: militants would target high-profile places to create the greatest possible psychological impact, now that they had struck in Hat Yai.

History has shown that successful attacks usually lead to bigger, more lethal dramas.

But the seven bombs last Sunday didn't seem to fall in that pattern.

However, this could well be a simple exercise in tactics.

Hat Yai streets were more or less emptied of Malaysian tourists, who were well on their way back home when the bombs went off. Moreover, none of the bombs had shrapnel and all appeared to have been small and quickly assembled.

Authorities said Sunday night's bombs were similar to those in Bangkok recently: lots of noise and political headaches, but not much physical damage.

With or without the insurgency in the far South, history has shown that Hat Yai, like many other border towns, has long been a battleground for influential figures fighting over control of illicit activities.

Given the fact that Hat Yai is not far from the boundaries of the troubled region - about 100km north of Pattani and about 50km east of Saba Yoi district, where another fatal bomb was detonated at a fresh market yesterday - it is understandably tempting to link any disturbances to the ongoing insurgency.

Coming up with a convincing answer as to how the mess in Hat Yai can be understood will be just as difficult in finding the culprits behind these attacks, who not only inflict death and injuries, but also cripple the local economy.

Another bomb explodes in Hat Yai

Hat Yai Two days after bombs exploded at seven locations in this provincial capital, another bomb went off near a hotel in the city yesterday. There were no casualties.

The explosion occurred about 1.45pm in front of the High Season Hotel on Ratyindee Road.

The explosion caused the temporary closure of the road. Nearby shops and banks suspended services for more than two hours.

Police said the remains of the homemade device found at the blast scene bore similarities to those used in Sunday's bombings, which injured 12 people.

One of Sunday's victims died yesterday. Songkhla's Narenthorn emergency medical unit said Suchart sae Tang, 60, succumbed to his wounds.

At least 30 youths armed with weapons, riding on motorcycles and in cars, stormed into Ban Kuanran village in Saba Yoi district of Songkhla shortly after midnight yesterday. They shot bullets into the air and at villagers' houses before fleeing. Nobody was hurt.

Apart from intimidating locals, police believed the youths aimed to challenge authorities and mark a success following an explosion at the market in the district township.

On Monday, an early morning bomb at a crowded wet market in Saba Yoi killed four people and wounded 26.

BTW, today is JUDGEMENT DAY in BKK...a high possibility of TRT getting deregistered and banned which can spell a big trouble for Thailand. Its tourism industry will be damaged beyond repairs if riots get underway....What a pity.

6 held for Hat Yai bombings

Hat Yai : Police have arrested 6 Muslim teenagers believed to have been involved in the multiple bombings in Hat Yai on Sunday night.

The teenagers were apprehended in Hat Yai during a raid on a house in tambon Kuan Lang on Wednesday night.

Deputy police chief Pol Lt-Gen Adul Saengsingkaew led a team of investigators back to the house yesterday. They found electrical wires and digital clocks that appeared to link the gang with the bombings.

Traces of explosive powder were found on the hands and fingernails of two of the youths, identified as Afandi Samae and Saidi Mamu, police said.

The team found electrical wire, traces of explosive powder, chemical substances and a clock timer. Police were gathering more evidence from the house as they believed that the youths were probably involved in the bombing.

Seven bombs went off on Sunday night, killing one person and injuring 12 others.

The area is still struggling to revive its tourism industry after six bombs went off in the tourist district in September last year, killing four people and injuring 82.

In Pattani, about 2,000 Muslims demonstrated in the compound of the main provincial mosque, calling on the government to remove all military ranger units from Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat and to lift the curfew in Yala's Yaha and Bannang Sata districts.

About 200 Muslim women and children again blocked the Yala-Betong road to push for the arrest of security officers accused of shooting dead five people and wounding eight others at Ban Pak Di in Bannang Sata district on April 9.

Bloody night in Southern Thailand

10 soldiers were killed last night when a powerful roadside bomb exploded in Yala's Bannang Sata district shortly before 10pm.

In a separate incident in Songkhla just a few hours earlier, 5 people were killed when a unknown number of gunmen fired at people at an evening market in Saba Yoi district.

The remote-controlled bomb was set off as 10 Army rangers were travelling past in a pickup truck along a back road linking Yala and Betong.

They were returning to their camp from crowd-control duty at a protest by local residents, Army spokesman Colonel Acra Thiproch said.

2 soldiers who survived the explosion later died at Yala Hospital. A hunt is under way for the culprits as authorities have received a lead from former insurgents who have surrendered, according to the spokesman.

The frequency of roadside bombing targeting soldiers in the restive deep South has increased over the past month.

A roadside bomb in Narathiwat 3 weeks ago took the lives of 7 soldiers on their way back from duty.

High security as South trains resume

Trains in the deep South resumed operating on Friday amidst tight security, three days after saboteurs damaged sections of tracks and caused a derailment that injured 14 passengers.

The first train that resumed service was the Hat Yai-Sungai Kolok service between Songkhla and Narathiwat provinces. It left Hat Yai at 6.30 a.m. as scheduled.

Soldiers, rangers and police have joined forces to patrol stations and junctions along the tracks.

In Narathiwat, insurgents detonated a remote-controlled bomb when a group of soldiers, part of a teacher escort group, was patrolling. Two soldiers, aged 22 and 25, were wounded by the blast.

Police said the five-kilogramme bomb was buried under an electrical pole and was detonated when six soldiers on three motorcycles were passing the spot.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Wednesday 27 June 2007 :-

Sadao market reduced to ashes

A wet market went up in smoke, a petrol station worker was killed in a drive-by shooting, a teacher escort unit had a narrow escape from a bomb and a pick-up truck was set on fire in incidents throughout in the far South yesterday. Police suspected arson was behind the blaze which reduced about 90% of the wet market in Songkhla's Sadao district to ashes.

The other incidents occurred in Pattani and Yala, further south.

The cabinet yesterday approved a budget of 271 million baht for the Southern Border Provinces Administration Centre to improve living standards in Yala, Satun, Pattani, Narathiwat and four districts of Songkhla.

Assistant government spokesman Natthawat Sutthiyothin said the money would be spent on educational, agricultural, vocational and religious projects.

The cabinet also approved an extra pension equivalent to that of a C-11 level retired official for the family of the late district chief of Pattani's Mai Kaen, Chaipat Raksayod, who was killed in a bomb blast in Pattani on June 19

Police estimated the losses from the blaze at Sadao's Kobkul market, which housed up to 200 shops and stalls on two-and-a-half rai of property, at 100 million baht.

The fire began about 1.45am somewhere in the middle of the market. Firefighters from four neighbouring districts took four hours to douse the flames.

The market and shops had no insurance for losses from fire.

Police initially suspected arson and posited two theories _ an insurgent attack or retaliation by gamblers or gangs of racers who were earlier been arrested.

Since April, there have been at least five cases of arson at schools, shops and prayer sites in Pangla municipality. All told, about 11 places have been torched.

In Yala, a pick-up truck belonging to the tambon Lidol administration organisation was set on fire near its offices in Muang district. Shortly afterwards, nearby Ban Taloh school was torched, but damage was minor.

In Pattani, petrol station attendant Matorhae Mama, 27, was killed in a drive-by shooting at a tea shop in Muang district about 12.30am. Four other customers were wounded.

A teacher escort team narrowly escaped death when a bomb exploded in Khok Pho district yesterday morning.

Eight suspected insurgents were transferred from Surat Thani to the custody of Internal Security Operations Command (Isoc) Region 4 in Songkhla.

They had been in hiding in the province since June 22 following an attack on soldiers. They were apprehended and a pick-up truck riddled with bullet holes and three mobile phones seized in a raid on a vehicle repair shop on Monday.

Out of the eight, Humdee Bueraheng, 19, a resident of Narathiwat's Rueso district, was identified as a member of the Runda Kumpulan Kecil, which authorities say is a leading organiser of violence.

Southern rail service cut as militants sabotage tracks

Rail services south of Hat Yai have resumed after a brief suspension Thursday. The suspension was carried out after insurgents sabotaged the tracks the night before, police said.

At least 65 nuts and bolts from sleepers on the track between Yala and Narathiwat provinces had been removed overnight, forcing trains services to a standstill, police said.

Railways in the restive region have come under repeated attacks in spite of stepping up in security. At least ten acts of sabotage on the tracks have been carried since early June.

Meanwhile, violence continue elsewhere in the Malayspeaking south.

A 32-year-old Muslim rubber taper was shot dead in early Thursday in Narathiwat while a gun fight between soldiers and insurgents broke out in Pattani, leaving three troops wounded.

More than 2,300 people have been killed, mostly ethnic Malays, in the south since the insurgency broke out in January 2004. The violence has continued despite reconciliatory efforts by the Bangkok government.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Sunday 15 July 2007 :-

Insurgency in deep South 'could evolve into civil war' - Security expert: Need information strategy

A security expert warned yesterday insurgent violence in the deep South could degenerate into civil war. Political scientist Panithan Watanayakorn said the strife-torn region could be beset by guerrilla warfare, like Aceh in Indonesia.

Mr Panithan, also security adviser to the prime minister, said it could then plunge into a catastrophic civil war.

''It is important the government learns about this insurgent organisation to undermine its structure,'' he said.

Mr Panithan said the insurgents had been successful in convincing the public they were capable of realising their goals.

''And this reflects the futility of government efforts over the past 20 years [to tackle the unrest],'' he said.

He said the state needed to develop a strategy of information management to counter the insurgency.

He was speaking to a forum on violence in the deep South at a seminar on southern development organised by the Democrat party in Songkhla.

Democrat leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said it was crucial for the government to push for results and involve the public in the process. ''It should not leave people in the dark and in a state of hopelessness.''

Prime Minister Surayud Chulanont said on TV yesterday violence in the region had begun to subside, judging from a decrease in bomb attacks.

But the violence continued yesterday.

In Songkhla's Saba Yoi district, two men were gunned down while riding a motorcycle. They were ambushed by an unknown number of assailants.

In Narathiwat's Rangae district, a man was shot dead by a motorcycle gunman.

Journalists covering the southern unrest said yesterday the draft charter, if promulgated, was unlikely to tame the insurgency.

Suwat Chamchuree, from Pattani, said locals saw little benefit in the draft.

''They don't care whether it's rejected or approved. They think withdrawal of troops is better than a constitution,'' he told a seminar at Thammasat University.

Journalist Supalak Ganjanakhundee said the charter did not provide any solutions to southern problems.

''There is no mention of it from the first to the last article. The charter even fails to recognise ethnicity,'' he said.

Conference centre plan to attract tourists to Hatyai

Hat Yai - Tourism officials want to turn Hat Yai into a major conference venue, hoping to draw visitors back to the province and revive its tourism industry, which has been severely hit by the southern insurgency. The plan is the latest effort to stimulate tourism activities in the business district.

The Office of Tourism Development believes the plan could work, even though the violence continues in the three nearby provinces of Pattani, Yala and Narathiwat.

''We need to promote Hat Yai as a new conference hub for the seven southern provinces,'' said office director Tanitta Manichot.

Her office thought of using conference and seminar programmes as a magnet for visitors after it was noticed that many government and state enterprise seminars and training programmes are organised in provinces on the Andaman coast.

Although Songkhla sits on the opposite coast, facing the Gulf of Thailand, the province is full of tourist attractions including resort beaches and small islands. Mrs Tanitta said Hat Yai could draw thousands of visitors by offering facilities for conferences and seminars, in addition to its tourist attractions.

There are 167 hotels in the province, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand's Hat Yai office.

Many, with a high standard of service, are in Hat Yai city and they have the potential to provide customers with conference facilities, Mrs Tanitta said.

Success would depend on additional measures being carried out by the state and private sectors.

Hat Yai is currently struggling to rebuild its tourism industry after insurgent attacks, including two major bomb blasts and the sabotage of railway tracks, deterred many tourists from visiting the province. The occupancy rate in hotels in Hat Yai dropped from an average of 65% to 20% after the bombs in September last year which killed four and injured 82, according to the Thai Hotel Association of Hat Yai.

The hotels need the rate to stay above 50% in order to survive, the group said.

Bomb targets southern tourist area

Narathiwat - A bomb exploded at a recreation park near a beach in Narathiwat's Tak Bai district but no one was wounded. The site is a popular visiting point for local residents and tourists on weekends.

A remote-controlled bomb was hidden at the site but no one was wounded in the explosion.

Meanwhile, a school was torched in Cho Ai Rong district after security forces raided a village and detained 25 people for questioning on Friday.

Banyaning School was burned to the ground on Friday night. Completely destroyed in the arson attack, police believe the fire was motivated in retaliation for the raid.

A number of electric power poles were felled and spikes were strewn on roads to prevent police from initially responding to the fire.

A combined force of 150 police and soldiers had encircled Durulinsan village in Cho Ai Rong and conducted close searches in 20 locations earlier in the day. The village is the hometown of Masae Useng, a key insurgent group leader, with a Bt5 million bounty on his head.

The arson occurred in the nighttime after officials held 25 suspects for questioning.

7 bomb blasts rock Narathiwat - 5 insurgents die in shoot-out with troops

4 districts of Narathiwat were shaken by seven bomb blasts which killed a villager and wounded 10 others early yesterday morning. In Yala, five suspected insurgents were killed in a clash with security personnel in Bannang Sata district yesterday evening, following a raid in Ban Gasod village.

An HK rifle, an M16 assault rifle, a pistol and a shotgun were seized.

The Narathiwat bombings occurred between 7.45am and 9am in Bacho, Muang, Rangae and Sungai Kolok districts.

The first explosion occurred in Bacho district when an eight-member teacher escort team was hit by a remote-controlled bomb, injuring two soldiers.

Later in Narathiwat municipality, an explosion occurred at a food shop on Prachapirom road, followed shortly after by another blast in front of Bang Nak market on Rangae Makka road.

A 4th bomb went off at Kasikornbank on Pupapakdee road.

No one was wounded in the three blasts at the municipality.

In Rangae district, a bomb tied to a motorcycle exploded at a noodle shop in Tanyongmas municipality market, killing a woman and wounding 10 villagers about 8.30am.

The dead woman was identified as La-ied Laosonglitthi, 48.

The 6th bomb blast occurred at a security booth at the Isuzu motor showroom on the Tak Bai-Sungai Kolok road in Sungai Kolok district. Nobody was injured.

Also in Sungai Kolok district, a 7th blast occurred at a local office of the Excise Department on the Asian Highway. No casualties were reported.

Police said the near-simultaneous explosions in four districts were probably in retaliation for the recent arrest of 53 suspected insurgents during coordinated raids in Narathiwat and Yala on Sunday.

In Songkhla, a bomb explosion killed a government official and wounded a villager at a crowded market in Na Thawi district last night.

Report from The New Straits Times dated Friday 10 August 2007 :-

Malaysian shot after meeting in Thailand goes awry

SUNGAI GOLOK : A Malaysian businessman is fighting for his life after being shot by a man during a meeting near the Che Kassim illegal jetty here on Wednesday.

Ismail Salleh, 44, was shot several times in the chest and abdomen. He was rushed by villagers to the Sungai Golok Hospital where he was warded in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

A hospital spokesman said Ismail was still unconscious and was on life support.

"Doctors are doing their best to save him. We removed the bullets in an emergency operation on Wednesday," said the spokesman.

In the incident, Ismail, who operates a business at the Wakaf Che Yeh market in Kota Baru, was in Thailand with a group of people for a business meeting.

A Sungai Golok police spokesman said the business meeting turned into an argument.

Several shots were fired at Ismail and the other businessmen fled the scene.

"Villagers who heard the gunshots rushed to the scene and found Ismail lying on the ground," said the spokesman.

Thai police have identified several of the people at the meeting but are unsure if they are still in the country.

"We will contact our Malaysian counterparts to help us in locating the suspects," he said.

Efforts to interview Ismail’s family were hampered by tight security at the ICU. Several guards were placed at the unit’s entrance, blocking entry to all except family members.

During a visit to the scene of the incident, the New Straits Times team was stopped by several villagers who cautioned outsiders not to enter the area as it was "rife with gangsters".

They warned the NST not to take any photographs for fear of untoward incidents.

This is the second time a Malaysian has been shot in Thailand this year.

In May, 19-year-old Saiful Abdul Rahim was shot in the thigh when he was caught in the crossfire of what was believed to be a shootout between rival drug gangs.

The latest incident has caused a stir among villagers living on the Malaysian side of Sungai Golok, across from the jetty where Ismail was shot.

A villager who wanted to be known only as Mek Semah said she called her children into the house when she heard the gunshot from across the river.

"I was so scared. That was the first time I’d heard a gunshot. I have told my family members to stop going to Thailand for the time being," she said.

Malaysian credit scammer arrested

Railway police in Hat Yai have arrested a 29-year-old Malaysian woman, charging she tried to smuggle more than 100 fake credit cards into southern Thailand.

The Malaysian news agency Bernama quoted Hat Yai railway police deputy chief Mahuntapol Srinot as saying the woman was found with the fake credit cards on the Butterworth-Bangkok express train.

Mahuntapol said they made the arrest after being tipped off that a woman passenger would be carrying illegal material into the country from Malaysia.

He said a police team led by Hat Yai railway police chief Aukkapak Jitprayoon boarded the train when it stopped in Hat Yai at about 6:45pm on Wednesday evening.

“Upon checking her bag, we found a plastic bag which contained the fake credit cards, allegedly issued by most of the commercial banks in Thailand,” he added.

The team also found 5,000 baht, which the woman told them was the payment for delivering the credit cards to Bangkok.

Several Malaysians have been arrested by Thai police this year for using fake credit cards to buy goods at popular shopping malls in the capital.

Last year, a Malaysian was caught stealing credit card information from a Bangkok bank.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Monday 3 September 2007 :-

Sadao emerging as safe and prosperous haven

Sadao district, a small town in Songkhla province on the Thailand-Malaysia border, has emerged as a bustling business centre, as unabated bombings in the three restive southernmost provinces and security worries in Hat Yai have prompted investors to shift into the area.

Hotel and entertainment businesses have been booming in Sadao over the last three years, with combined investment capital exceeding 10 billion baht, according to Thawee Piyapatana, chairman of the provincial chapter of the Federation of Thai Industries.

Four new hotels with combined capacity of about 500-600 rooms are also being constructed.

Hat Yai, long considered the business hub of the South and also popular with tourists, has been relatively sluggish ever since bombing incidents began to spread beyond the three troubled border provinces.

The situation would not likely return to normal as long as the border provinces remain unstable, Mr Thawee predicted. Tourists from Malaysia have tended to stop off in Hat Yai before going on to Trang province, which is home to many more attractive tourism spots.

Other southern provinces, particularly Nakhon Si Thammarat and Surat Thani, are experiencing substantial growth, as former residents of the three troubled provinces have been relocating.

However, the now-ebbing Jatukarm Ramathep amulet fever also played a key part in the growing economy in Nakhon Si Thammarat, while Surat Thani is benefiting from the presence of new alternative energy ventures and power plants to drive growth.

According to Mr Thawee, while industrial factories in the South such as the frozen seafood, and rubber-based furniture have been hard hit by strong baht, there are no signs of layoffs yet.

In fact, he said, the Southern factories were facing a labour shortage of about 20,000 to 30,000 people, particularly manual workers.

Somjit Anuntamek, deputy secretary-general of the Thai Chamber of Commerce and president of the Southern Economic Development Committee, said the economy of the South was expected to drop this year because of lower farmers' income, as the prices of major agricultural products and indigenous fruits such as rambutan, mangosteen, and longong had fallen sharply.

The purchasing power of Southerners, be it for new cars, motorcycles or houses, has declined accordingly.

New investments in the South are also expected to be fairly small because of unrest in the three southernmost provinces.

The southern economy contributed about 9.9% of the country's gross domestic product worth of 7.78 trillion baht last year.

GDP growth in the South was 4.3% in 2006.

''I personally see the government's special economic zone which covers Yala, Pattani, Songkhla, Narathiwat and Satun province will magnify the problem,'' said Mr Somjit. ''The government would be better off limiting the area to only the three provinces and solve the problem more seriously within a limited area.''

Busted: Hat Yai bomb plot

Security forces have foiled a suspected terrorist plot to wreak havoc in Hat Yai, the commercial capital of Songkhla province, recovering 17 bombs in the city yesterday before they could be detonated.

A bomb disposal unit discovered the 17 improvised explosive devices (IEDs) hidden in two locations in the city.

A security source said five bombs were discovered near a fence of the Prince of Songkhla University on Poonakan road. Explosives experts said the detonation cords were missing and would have probably been attached only shortly before an attack.

Another 12 bombs were discovered outside a restaurant belonging to the navy in downtown Hat Yai.

All the bombs were home-made and authorities believe they were destined to be planted at various places in the commercial hub of Hat Yai.

The source said the low-pressure bombs were apparently intended to cause havoc rather than deaths. They were similar to a device that exploded near the army headquarters in Bangkok last week, which injured two bomb disposal officers.

On Sept 22, security forces came across five bombs at a public park in Hat Yai. That discovery, coupled with intelligence warnings of possible attacks in the once-bustling tourist city of Hat Yai, has spurred the authorities into beefing up security patrols in the area.

Report from Bangkok Post dated Friday 12 October 2007 :-

Tutorial centres mushrooming in Hat Yai

Hat Yai - The economy in the South may be slow, but the tutorial business is thriving in Songkhla's Hat Yai district, with at least 500 million baht in fees being paid annually. Handsome profits and rising demand from students have prompted tutorial centres in Bangkok to open branches in Hat Yai. There are now more than 100 tutorial centres in the downtown area.

More than 30 tutorial centres are on Juti-anusorn road, in the Hat Yai business area.

Popular cramming schools from Bangkok such as Ajarn Ou's Chemistry, Prakitpao Tomthitchong's Applied Physics and the Enconcept E-Academy have attracted many students even though they have to learn from videos.

Among popular tutorial centres run by local tutors are Kwankue, Ajarn Sawat and Hat Yai Tutors.

Not only Hat Yai-based students are taking courses. These tutorial centres also attract students from neighbouring provinces, including Yala, Pattani and Narathiwat in the deep South.

Tutoring schools offer a wide range of topics, with courses in physics, chemistry, maths and English the most popular. There are also special intensive courses for the university entrance examination.

Ms Kanya, a staff member of Wannasorn tutoring centre, an outlet of Ajarn Ou's Chemistry school in Bangkok, said many students applied for courses at the centre during school breaks. Most applicants were local people, or from provinces such as Phatthalung, Satun, Trang, Nakhon Si Thammarat and the three southernmost provinces.

More than 1,000 students are registered at the centre. Each room can take 70-100 students, she said.

''We provide courses every day. The average cost is about 2,000-3,000 baht. Courses covering the university entrance exam are 4,000 baht each,'' she said, adding that most outlets of Ajarn Ou's Chemistry school use video tape recordings by Ajarn Ou. Only the Sapan Kwai branch in Bangkok offers live tutoring courses.

An official in the educational zone 2 in Songkhla province said 106 private tutoring schools offer courses in the zone. Their standards are inspected at least once a year.

Many parents said allowing their children to take courses during school breaks was better than letting them stay home and spend their time watching TV or playing computer games.

Patcharee Leelapong said she paid 3,000 baht for her son's courses during this summer break as he was preparing to take an entrance examination for Mathayom Suksa 1 level next year. She said the price was worth it.

Another parent said extra tutoring fees for her son were higher than his formal education fees.

Krairop Watcharachutimanond, who runs the Kwankue tutoring centre, said at least 500 million baht was circulating in the tutoring business in Hat Yai.

Outlets from well-known tutorial centres from Bangkok attracted the largest share of students.

His centre offered packages covering five subjects at all education levels.

Each package for primary students cost about 2,800 baht per head and 2,000-4,000 baht per head for those studying at the secondary level.

Thatchapong Ungrattanakorn, a Mathayom Suksa 6 at Hat Yai Witthayalai school, said he liked tutoring courses as private tutors made the subjects easier to understand.

Other students said they turned to tutors for help before university entrance exams to brush up on certain subjects.

Rectors oppose plan to give Yawi priority - Varsity council believes move could backfire

Hat Yai - The Council of University Rectors yesterday opposed a draft education plan for students in the deep South which would make Yawi the main teaching language.

Rectors of the 26 state universities attending the meeting insisted that the government make teaching in Thai language compulsory in the southernmost region, while Yawi, the local Malay dialect, could be taught to local students as a second language in school.

The Education Ministry has been trying to improve the academic performance of Muslim students in the far South for quite sometime now.

Test scores have consistently shown that the average performance of students in the region was worse than their peers in other regions. Research has led to the conclusion that a major cause of that was poor Thai language ability.

Since members of most Muslim communities in the five southernmost provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Satun and Songkhla communicate in Yawi at home, they cannot be expected to comprehend their lessons in state schools which are taught in Thai.

To bring improvements, the ministry recently introduced a pilot bilingual project in 14 primary schools in the region. Under the scheme, teachers were asked to give most of their lessons in Yawi.

The project has drawn heavy fire from some educators, who warn that the move could backfire and would only worsen the situation.

Council chairman Vanchai Sirichana said students should not be stopped from learning Yawi to maintain the unique culture of their communities, but the dialect should be relegated to a second language in school.

"If their Thai is not good, it would be difficult for them to excel in other subjects, and finding a well-paid job won't be easy after graduation," he said.

"We'll forward our recommendation to the Education Ministry and will ask rectors who are also members of the National Legislative Assembly to discuss the issue at length with the NLA education committee," said Mr Vanchai, rector of Mae Fah Luang University in Chiang Rai.

The ministry has also drawn up a four-year strategic plan, 2008 to 2011, to develop education in the five southern border provinces of Yala, Pattani, Narathiwat, Songkhla and Satun, for which it plans to seek a 16-billion-baht budget from the cabinet.

The Council of University Rectors has called on the ministry to take education experts' opinions into account before implementing the strategic plan.

The council yesterday announced the launch of the Hat Yai agreement, which reflected a concerted effort by the 26 state universities to solve education problems and upgrade the region's education standards.

The Prince of Songkhla University in Hat Yai will act as the nerve centre for developing the quality of teachers and other education personnel in the region.

Tiger Airways terminates Singapore-Hat Yai route

The Singapore-based no-frills carrier Tiger Airways has terminated daily flights from Singapore to Hat Yai in a move that may undermine its bid to rebuild the southern Thai city's struggling tourism industry.

The route cancellation, which took effect last Sunday, has cut the last direct air link between the largest metropolitan area in southern Thailand with a foreign country as security concerns are growing with the proliferation of insurgent attacks in recent years.

In June last year, AirAsia, the Malaysia-based low-cost carrier, suspended its daily service between Kuala Lumpur International Airport and Hat Yai International Airport after nine months of bumpy operations due to poor traffic demand on the route.

Tiger Airways' termination of the Singapore-Hat Yai service will limit the flow of Singaporean tourists to the city, which is popular among Malaysians, Singaporeans and Indonesians.

Tiger Airways officials said the decision to drop Hat Yai from its network has less to do with the poor load factor on the route than its strategy to shift aircraft capacity to support last month's launch of service to India, which offers more business potential.

The airline is operating nine Airbus A320-200s, each capable of seating 180 passengers.

It has won approval from Indian authorities to start flying to six cities in India: Chennai, Kochi, Goa, Trivandrum, Kolkata and Kozhikode. It has already started flights to Chennai and Kochi.

Before its termination, Tiger Airways was reportedly carrying about 120 passengers on each flight.

Tiger Airways' exit is bad new for Hat Yai's tourism industry, which is already reeling from a wave of rebel attacks. Two major bomb blasts in the past few years and the sabotage of railway tracks have deterred many tourists from visiting the city popular for its night entertainment and restaurants.

The occupancy rate in hotels in Hat Yai dropped from an average of 65% to a low of 20% after the bombs in Sept 2006, which killed four and injured 82, according to the Thai Hotel Association of Hat Yai.

Meanwhile, airlines operating domestic flights between Bangkok and Hat Yai will only increase route frequencies marginally as the outlook for incremental demand in the high season that started this month does not look promising.

Only two budget carriers - Thai AirAsia and Nok Airlines - decided to increase flights on the route to six a day from five, starting at the end of last month, according to Hat Yai International Airport director Wicha Nernlop.

Thai Airways International's three daily flights and One-Two-Go Airlines' two daily flights will continue throughout the high season.

Hat Yai registered low growth in passenger throughput among the six major airports operated by the Airports of Thailand Plc (AoT) for the year ending in September.

Passengers through Hat Yai inched up 3.28% year-on-year to 1.33 million, comprising 1.24 million domestic passengers (up 7.17%) and 94,612 international passengers (down 30.02%). Passenger traffic through Hat Yai was below its annual capacity of two million.
