Choked drain at MRT site caused flood

AUDREY TAN & JALELAH ABU BAKER, THE STRAITS TIMES

Dec 30, 2016 06:00 am

A choked drain in a nearby construction site for the upcoming Upper Thomson MRT station led to the flash floods that put a dampener on the festive mood at several eateries on Christmas Eve.

This was uncovered during investigations by national water agency PUB.

To fix the problem, the Land Transport Authority will get the worksite's contractor to further improve the flow of water in the temporary diversion drain, which acts as a conduit for rain water while drainage upgrading works are ongoing.

"As part of works to construct Upper Thomson MRT Station, PUB is also working with LTA to upgrade the drain along Upper Thomson Road to enhance flood protection for the area," the authorities told The Straits Times.

PUB has also reminded the construction industry to conduct checks on the public drains in the vicinity of their respective construction sites in preparation for the monsoon season.

The flash flood incident took place last Saturday, at a row of shops between Jalan Keli and Jalan Todak near Thomson Plaza.

About eight businesses along Upper Thomson Road were affected by the flash floods, and tenants said they suffered thousands of dollars in losses.

The Meteorological Services Singapore said average rainfall over Singapore that day was 35.5mm, with the highest daily rainfall that day recorded at Tai Seng (86.0mm).

Mr Jamal Mohamed, 50, a cashier at The Roti Prata House, one of the affected eateries, estimated his loss at about $30,000, including the hours that the shop had to stay closed while workers cleaned up.

After it closed at about 5.30pm on Saturday, workers managed to keep regular business hours only on Monday.

"We salvaged what we could, but flour, masala, rice and eggs were wasted," said the employee, who has been working at the food joint for nine years.

The nearby construction for the Upper Thomson station, is part of a 22-station Thomson Line, started in 2014. The station will be built underneath a stretch of Upper Thomson Road between Thomson Plaza and the Church of the Holy Spirit.

MRT upgrades full steam ahead

Adrian Lim, The Straits Times

Dec 29, 2016 06:00 am

Singapore's first MRT system, the North-South and East-West lines, will turn 30 next year.

To renew its ageing infrastructure and extend the system's lifespan, a slew of projects are under way, including the installation of a new signalling system to allow trains to arrive at shorter intervals, and the replacement of the power-supplying third rail.

Last Tuesday, a massive four-year project to replace 188,000 worn-out timber sleepers with new, hardier concrete ones was completed. This means a shorter, smoother and safer journey.

Sleepers help to hold the tracks in place, and worn-out ones can lead to a bumpier ride.

During the project, speed restrictions were temporarily imposed where the new sleepers were laid, increasing train journey times.

To give its workers more time during off-service hours, operator SMRT also ended services earlier for some time, and opened certain stations later on Sundays. This inevitably affected travel plans of commuters.

The replacement of 96,000 sleepers on the North-South line and 92,000 of them on the East-West line marks a milestone in their renewal.

With one major item on the list checked, the Land Transport Authority and SMRT can continue to roll ahead with the other upgrading projects.

Rail engineers typically have a short working window of between three and four hours in the early morning - when train services are offline.

Now only do upgrade ? Isn't it a bit too late ?

The residents and the business affected by this flood should make full claim from LTA.

Delays on East-West Line due to track fault

Published 3 hours ago

Updated 3 hours ago

SINGAPORE - A track fault caused delays for up to an hour on the East-West Line during morning rush hour on Wednesday (Jan 4).

The east-bound stretch from Boon Lay to Clementi stations was affected, train operator SMRT first said in a tweet at 7.47am.

It warned commuters to expect an additional 10 minutes travelling time, which it later revised to 15 minutes.

In an update at 8.03am, SMRT also revealed that the fault was near Clementi station and that trains were running slower as a result.

SMRT announced at 8.36am that the fault had been cleared.
